Description
Hi there! I'm Rama, and I am currently running a Hostel, a conscious travelling and community focused hostel nestled in the peaceful village of Borobudur, Magelang, where Borobudur Temple is located. Our place sits right in front of rice fields, so every morning starts with green views, good vibes, and the sounds of nature.
We’re more than just a place to sleep, we’re a space where travelers can truly connect, unwind, and feel at home. With only 8 beds in our dorm and one private room, we’ve intentionally kept things small and intimate so we can focus on meaningful experiences rather than mass tourism.
Because we’re not just a hostel, we also run programs aimed at doing good for our local community. That could mean planting trees, teaching English to locals, or creating other activities based on the skills you bring with you.
We also run a legal aid initiative dedicated to providing legal education and support for the people of Borobudur. Beyond that, we’ve had volunteers lead sessions on financial literacy, cleanliness, and other practical knowledge. So if you have ideas or passions to share, we’re always happy to hear them, your contribution could make a real impact.
Staying or volunteering with us means joining a warm, welcoming atmosphere where guests are friends, not just bookings. It’s easy to share stories over breakfast, explore the area together, and be part of something real.
Our Values
We deeply believe in conscious and responsible tourism. That means:
Keeping our footprint low by limiting guest capacity
Reducing waste, and using energy and water mindfully
Supporting and collaborating with local businesses
Sourcing local products to create authentic, community driven experiences
We partner with nearby initiatives, including a local free environmental school and love to involve Workawayers who share our spirit of giving back and doing good.
Who You’ll Be Working With
At our hostel, you’ll meet a small but warm and friendly team.
There’s me, Rama. I’m the owner of the hostel, though I split my time between Borobudur and Jakarta. Usually, I’m in Borobudur for about two weeks, then in Jakarta for the next two. Even when I’m not on site, I stay connected and involved in everything going on.
You’ll also be working closely with Danang, our full time local staff member. He’s kind, helpful, and always ready to make guests and volunteers feel welcome. Then there’s Jerry, our night staff who takes care of the hostel overnight and ensures everything runs smoothly while the rest of us get some rest.
Feel free to ask us anything, we’re happy to chat and make sure expectations are clear from the start. We want this to be a fun, positive experience for both of us!Types of help and learning opportunities

While staying with us at our Hostel, you’ll also experience true Indonesian hospitality and get a chance to learn about local Javanese culture, from daily village life to local customs, food, and traditions. We’re happy to share what we know and invite you to be part of it.
If you're interested, you can also practice your Bahasa Indonesia with us, and maybe even pick up a few words in Javanese, the local language spoken by many people in the area.
We believe cultural exchange goes both ways, so we’re also excited to learn about your background, stories, and experiences.Help

At our Hostel, we love creating space for genuine cultural exchange, and that includes language! If you're interested in learning Bahasa Indonesia, we're more than happy to help you practice through daily conversation, informal chats, or even over coffee and local snacks. You’ll pick up useful phrases, local expressions, and maybe even some Javanese words spoken by the people in the village. In return, we’re also curious about your language! Whether it’s English, Spanish, French, German, or anything else, we’d love to learn a few words or practice our skills too. For some of our staff, it’s a great chance to improve their English through casual, friendly interactions with volunteers. So, don’t worry if you’re still learning Bahasa, we’re patient, encouraging, and always excited to help (and learn from you, too). Language, after all, is one of the best bridges between people.Accommodation
As a volunteer at our hostel, you'll stay in our 8 bed mixed dormitory, complete with air conditioning to keep you cool and comfortable. The dorm has access to a shared bathroom with hot showers, and you’ll enjoy free Wi-Fi, plus complimentary tea and coffee to start your mornings right. Breakfast, and dinner is also provided.
We also have bicycles you can use to explore the peaceful surroundings, ride through the rice fields, visit nearby temples, or stroll around the village like a local. What else ...
We’ll introduce you to the locals and our friends here!
Also, we’re really into music at our hostel! I listen to tons of bands from the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, and beyond. Some examples include Cocteau Twins, Pixies, Beach House, The Smashing Pumpkins, Joy Division, Sonic Youth, Fugazi, and many, many more. Let’s meet and trade playlists!A little more information
