TUSCANY-LUCCA help out playing (music also) and speaking English our 13 years old son close to Lucca in Summer:
- first period from the 28 of July to the 13 th of August
Hi people! We are Simona and Mariano, we have a 13 years old son, nice and curious. He likes sports ( especially skate and juijitsu), plays piano and bass and outdoor activities. What else: chess, tennis table, drawing, cooking and contemporary music. I work as a pedagogist child- -art and nature in Lucca and Mariano as a IT at University in Pisa. Lucca is a wonderful tiny historical town in Tuscany close to many cultural and natural places and attractions.
We are very easy going people. We love meeting people and different cultures. We live in a 3 stages court yard house with garden. We have a cat. Internet Wi-fi is available. We like spending time at the seaside and in the mountains in Tuscany during the week end, and in the afternoon in summer time. Bike is available to explore the area, ( there a nice river close to our house, and a bike path close the river going to the the center of Lucca).

Lucca is a very nice and historic town, and we live in a very quite area. We would like to offer the possibilities to young people to travel and make experiences abroad as we did when we were younger. We love, music, nature, arts, cooking and eating together, going to the seaside and the mountains, welcome friends. We would like to share our Italian way of living with you, our language and improving our English or other languages ( I can speak also French, some Portoguese and a a bit of Spanish and German). We believe you could have a great experience. In Summer there are lots of cultural events going on in the center of the town and in Tuscany. This Summer there's also a special Art event " Biennale d'architettura" in Venice if you like.

We are looking for a person, better guy, but girl as well, who loves staying with kids, joyful and energetic, non smoker better loving nature, sports and arts . We work during the morning, so we would like someone, who stay in a relax way with our child, playing, doing sports and talking to him in English and improving any other skill you may have to offer and share from almost 8.30-9.00 am to 1.30 pm. We would prefer an English mother tongue, but open to other possibilities. We expect the guy/girl to be tidy, and keep his/her room and the bathroom tidy. Afternoon and week end free or if you like, you can share with us.
If you like you can have some references reading feedbacks the previous workawayers left about their experience at our place.

We offer a single room with a bathroom ( that we used only for taking shower since there 's another bathroom next to our bedrooms). We share food and eat togheter. We are flexible.

During your free time ( mornings and most part of the week end) you have many possibilities: going around on your own or join us. Relax at home, or going around by bike. A Bus stop just outside our house and in 5-10 minutes to Lucca City center or 30 minutes to Pisa's. You can reach Florence by trainin 1 h .and 1/2. Being at the seaside by train in 30 minutes. We are used to go to the magic Baratti seaside ( 100 Km far from Lucca). So we are in the middle of beauty of Tuscany.

This Summer, I was lucky enough to spend 4 weeks with Simona,… read more Mariano, Roberto, and Alice in their wonderful home in Lucca. When I landed in Pisa, I immediately felt welcomed. The sight of them smiling and waving calmed any nerves I had about taking part in a workaway exchange for the first time. Thanks to their warm welcome and how accommodating they all were, it didn’t take me long to settle in. From the emails that I had exchanged with Simona beforehand, I knew that the family and I would have a lot in common. I feel like we immediately connected. The light-hearted environment and fun dynamic reminded me of my own family. During the first few evenings at dinner, even though my Italian comprehension was a bit rusty, I laughed along with their jokes. Throughout the whole stay, I was made to feel extremely included and appreciated. They were incredibly attentive and interested when I talked about my English and Japanese culture and in turn, they helped me to understand all the beautiful (and not so beautiful) parts of their country and culture. We exchanged Italian, Japanese and (the few) English delicacies and talked for hours about food in classic Italian fashion.
The main purpose of my stay was to look after Roberto while his parents were at work, help him with his homework, and speak English with him. Although it was formally my “job”, I had the best time when I was with Roberto. After he grumbled through his homework (which he didn’t need any help with at all), we spent the days playing chess, cooking together, playing basketball or football, swimming and cycling into Lucca. Roberto is an amazing boy. I never had any trouble with him as he is incredibly polite, well mannered, and respectful. He is inquisitive, eager to learn and embraces new cultures and foreign things. He absorbed everything I told him at the table or in the kitchen and quickly learnt how to do it himself. I especially enjoyed making gyoza together, and watching Roberto master the technique. His intelligence was very evident from the start, he completed rubix cubes at lightning speed and by the end of my 4 weeks he was schooling me at chess. Once again, Roberto is a lovely boy who made my first aupair experience easier and more enjoyable than I ever could have imagined. I loved spending time with Roberto, and I can’t wait to hear and see first-hand what he gets up to in his bright future.
Simona and I had a lot of opportunity for conversations during car trips to and from the river. We talked about everything from music and dancing to the French way of showing affection. Not only were these car trips often hilarious, but it was also through these conversations that I realised that we shared a lot of values. Something that really resonated with me was her stories of her travels to Brazil and what she gained from it. Part of the reason she chooses to host workawayers is to repay the favour that people did for her in the past. This kindness and idea of giving back shows the special person Simona is. She is kind, warm hearted, sensitive person who believes in the good of fellow human beings. I’m very glad to have met and talked with Simona. I hope the friendship we made can carry on for years to come.
I laugh a lot when I think back to the Summer and the conversations we would have at dinner. Often, it’s the memories of Mariano’s jokes that make me laugh the most. On multiple occasions, his one-liners and… special ways of explaining things had me in stitches. He could make the most sensible of conversations into a laughing matter. In fact, a lot of my sensory memories from the trip are thanks to Mariano in some way or another: the enticing aromas emanating from the kitchen as he prepared dinner; the delicious flavours when I took the first bite; and the bossa nova melodies that rang through the house as he played his home-made guitars. I can only thank him for adding so much colour and joy to my time in Italy.
Finally, my stay wouldn’t have been the same without Alice’s company. At breakfast, during walks and when hiding from the summer sun, we filled the silence by talking about everything. I took great comfort in having someone my own age there. I loved sharing our interests and views on the world. Through our conversations, I got an insight into the kind, intelligent, and thoughtful person that she is.
I met other members of the family, who all welcomed me and made me feel comfortable.
It was beautiful to be a part of this family and watch it function during the Summer. They are genuinely good people. They treated me with so much hospitality and patience. Anyone who has the pleasure of meeting and speaking with their wonderful family should consider themselves extremely blessed. They were a major part of one of the most enjoyable and educative Summers of my life and I hope they can be part of many memories to come. I can’t wait to see and hear what you’re all getting up to. I look forward to the day when I can see your faces again.

as I told you, it would have taken a while to write your feedback. I always need time to do it. Eventually, here I am writing your feedback in a rainy day... ( eventually it rains here too)
Let’s start from the beginning. Roberto is really interested in Japanese culture and food as his sister is, and so, when Brett wrote to us, we… read more immediately like his mail and presentation. Not just because his half Japanese roofs sounded exotics to us but because he is really a special guy.
He spent a month with us this Summer.
Our previous experiences with workawayers were great and totally positive. With Brett has been even better if possible, I can’t explain in another way. As Roberto said 11/10.
It was his first experience as a workawayer but actually we got well from the e-mail we wrote each other, and meet on Skype. And when he came here from the first day everything got on well, with all of us.
Brett is a positive, respectful, responsible, curious, accultured guy, talkative and open minded, genuinely interested in cultural and human exchanges, sensitive and good listener, down to earth, and really creative and joyful. Really self-determined and purposeful, with clear aims to pursue in his life and studies. Besides with a great sense of humor.
Clean, tidy guy collaborative at home for helping in set up or clearing away the table and so on. He is a passionate cooker....on the way to become a chef as the father is.
He can speak a good Italian French and Spanish.

Roberto adored spending time with Brett. They got on well, more than well. They liked cooking Italian and Japanese food together, playing chess, cards, talking, riding bikes. Brett knew how to involve Roberto and teaching him new competencies but also in supervising Roberto’s homeworks for school. He was kind a big brother for him and Roberto was really fond of him.

Since it was so incredibly hot and damp, they spent the most part of there time together inside the house. But they never got annoyed. They always had something to do together, with Alice as well.
He spent evenings talking with us in our very late dinner in the garden or playing guitar and sing English songs or reading or talking to Alice. They are the same age and had interests in common that shared both in Italian and English.

He was such a positive presence in our house. He also was very sensitive, respectful and wise in dealing with such a critical period for our family when our niece was at hospital in very critical conditions and we were hosting her sister as well. We were all so worried about and he really had a gentle emotional touch and presence for all of us.

Actually he liked staying with Robi also during his spare time. Saturday morning they went to Lucca by bike to have an Italian breakfast in a bar ecc. We really enjoy his company during the week end or afternoons he spent with us in the mountains or at the river with also our friends.

Personally I really enjoyed the time we spent together talking in English and Italian about relationships, love, relationships in families, how to express emotions in British culture and in Latin culture “ un regalo al mondo”… ti ricordi? I was honored by the trust you got on me. Then trying to explain different ways of saying in Italian and English and than laughing about the metaphores Mariano used to explain Italian crazy politics.

Wish you the best for all your projects now that you are in Lyon and later in Spain and for all your life.
Brett we all miss you and we talk about you sometimes, and we think of you with a big smile and lot of affection. Hope we can keep in touch, and waiting for you to come to see us again whenever you want, since you are part of our extended family.

I will probably just be echoing the other feedback here, but bless this family. I had a genuinely heart-warming, happy, peaceful month, and feel deeply grateful for the experience. Recommended for anyone who loves children, loves food, wine, sunshine, enjoys mountains, rivers, sea-sides, towns, and wants a delicious slice of Italian life.

Simona… read more is a confident, conversational, and optimistic woman with a great deal of care, interest, and generosity. She was always making sure I was happy and had a great sense of humour. Mariano is a gentle, tech-savvy, and gastronomically skilled man, who made some extraordinarily good meals and improvised beautiful, wistful Bossa-Nova guitar over my piano playing. We often stayed up playing past midnight.

Robbie – the main event – is a tender-hearted, curious, and very funny child. My time with him was a true pleasure and joy. He was shy for about 5 seconds, but we very quickly become great pals. Under 10s culture seems to have remained pretty static since 2004 – Lego, Pokémon, Star Wars, Harry Potter – so there was no shortage of ice-breakers. But, even past the language barrier, we got to know each other very well very quickly. I loved playing characters, building dens, drawing, singing, dancing. He was always just great fun to be around. As ‘work’, it couldn’t have been more like ‘play’.

I should also mention Alice, Mariano’s daughter who often tended to be around, and would help me with lunch. She was extremely courteous, pleasant, and helpful.

My 5 hours went from about 9am to 2pm every weekday, leaving me afternoons and weekends free. Breakfast tended to be pretty simple. I tended to make lunch. The ingredients cupboard was always full. Dinner we tended to have together, and was always delicious. The house is big, stocked with everything you need, and stays cool during the height of summer – including the attic which is the bedroom. Lucca is a very beautiful city – as beautiful as Florence, only less crowded – and only a short, scenic bike-ride away.

I was working on my dissertation at the time, so didn’t get as much exploration or language-learning done as I might have hoped. Suffice to say Toscana is a staggeringly beautiful part of the world, and a great place to improve your Italian. We often went on weekend trips to friends, which I enjoyed a great deal, and opened my eyes to a great deal of beauty. I am sure, when I come back, there will be a great deal more of this gorgeous country to see.

This place will give you warm, joyous memories.

We all travel in search of moments that will be forever etched in our minds; we look for experiences that will stick with us for the rest of our lives; and we seek people that can teach us something about themselves, and thus, teach us something about who we are. Staying with Simona, Mariano, and Roberto (Robi) gave me all of this. I don’t want to… read more be too sappy or sentimental, but I am a better person as a result of my time with them, and I can’t wait to see them again!

They were my first workaway experience, and I am forever grateful for everything they taught me. Simona is a mother who exudes self-confidence, determination, and unconditional love. She is sweet, loves a good chat, and has a wicked sense of humour. Mariano is a devote father, humble, and is incredibly gentle. He is a wonderful craftsman, and an equally talented cook. And of course, the highlight of the family is Roberto. Roberto is a child gifted in every way I can think of. He is intelligent well beyond his years, has an imagination unparalleled by any child I’ve ever met, and boasts the maturity of a young man at the tender age of six. I cannot speak highly enough of this family, they are wonderful human beings, the type you hope to be lucky enough to meet. Simona and Mariano have done a magnificent job raising this young boy.

I spent about six weeks staying with them in their beautiful house in Lucca. I was given my own room, which was spacious and comfortable. I was given authentic italian meals three times a day, all of which were fantastic. Mariano always made sure there was some beer in the fridge for me, and they stocked the fridge with all my favourite foods: meats, cheeses, and yogurts! I was given time off to explore Lucca, Pisa, Florence, and Napoli. My daily situation was great, if you stay with them you won't ever have to worry about going hungry or where you will sleep. But what mattered most, is that I was welcomed into their family with open arms. I always felt welcome, safe, comfortable, and appreciated.

My daily routine consisted of looking after Roberto for a few hours every morning (Monday to Friday) while Simona and Mariano were at work. Roberto and I clicked immediately, this kid is so easy to get along with! He is sociable, he is caring, he has a sense of humour, and he loves learning new things. We would play lego, play football, make up new games like obstacle courses or “the floor is lava”, or “taste tests”, and take little bicycle trips. The days were easy and enjoyable. In playing with Roberto, I learned just as much as he did. The language barrier was an issue for about 2 hours, that’s all! After that first 2 hours, we both figured out how to communicate with one another pretty quickly and efficiently. He understands far more English than he cares to admit, because he likes to pretend he doesn’t understand in order to get away with things (he is so sneaky!). And he is happy to teach you italian, my italian became…passable. I already spoke French, and so comprehending italian was relatively easy by the end of my time there, and my vocabulary became good enough that I could have small broken conversations with people.

Spending time with Roberto was so much fun and was so rewarding, that I enjoyed spending time with him in the evenings even though Simona and Mariano didn’t ask me to. Roberto always had friends over and we would play “nascandino at night” or look up at the stars. I love telling people that one of my best friends is a six year old italian kid. In many ways, I see him as the little brother I never had. My time with these people was magical, and I consider them part of my extended family. I know that I will always have not just a place to stay in Lucca, but what I consider a home.

I can't state it any more plainly than this: stay with this family, it will be one of the best experiences of your life.
