… read more incredible mentor, and a gifted artist, activist, and intercultural mediator. He speaks 4 languages fluently: Arabic, English, French, and Italian.
As a Workawayer for the centre, I carried out a variety of tasks. My primary job was photographing the activities of the Center, which mainly revolved around work with refugees. I visited refugee camps with Ramzi, formed close friendships with the refugees, and photographed throughout it all. I also taught English classes three times a week to local Sicilians. The help was all reasonable, and so fulfilling. I also got to travel to a march in Palermo with refugees, visited refugee boat sites, and I traveled with Ramzi to other sites in Sicily.
The room situation was as incredible as the work. I stayed in the Center's hostel, had my own room, and basically the hostel to myself. It has an incredible terrace, and is located only 5 minutes walking a beautiful swimming spot on the Mediterranean. The water is gorgeous. It is located in the center of Ortigia (historic center of Syracuse, an island) which is a vibrant place to live. On Ortigia I made a lot of music, met a lot of people, improved my Italian 100%, and marveled at the incredible architecture daily.
I cannot speak highly enough about this opportunity. I will forever cherish and be deepened by the experiences I had volunteering for centre in Syracuse.
