My name is Saar and I am from the Netherlands.

Why I love life:

Why life loves me:

I have worked on a care farm with disabled people. I have organized party's for students in our town while I was in high school.
After my graduation I started as a sportclass teacher. In my second year of study I became a member of the University Council of the University of Utrecht.
I am currently a Living Lab coördinator (project management) with the mission to make the library square more green and sustainable. Next to this job I work as a garabadge collector one day a week.
During the summer I work voluntarily on a surf camp in France or on a Canoe Tribe in Sweden. I make sure that the families who visit us have a nice stay by organising activities.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Share your English skills ...)

I am Matthijs and I volunteered in Honda for 3 months. This volunteering experience exceeded all my expectations and has been one of the best experience of my life. My time in Honda was truly amazing. The town itself is beautiful, with all the facilities I needed (supermarkets, gym, delicious pizza restaurants, and more!). I got used to the… read more weather after a few weeks, but it's still very hot! All the people I met in Honda were incredibly helpful and kind.

Without any prior teaching experience and speaking very little Spanish, I started out quite nervous in the classroom, but the enthousiasm and kindness from the kids made me feel a lot better instantly. I had a blast teaching so many different students, from elementary school to university. Every grade required a different teaching approach, which made the classes dynamic and unique every time. The English teachers I worked with are all amazing people with a passion for teaching, a big thank-you to Edward, Andrés, Alejandra, and Yeison. Being at the school never felt like work to me because I enjoyed what I was doing so much, and I was always surounded by great people.
During my time in Honda, we worked at the private school (Coreducation) most of the time. Three hours a week, we also taught at the public school (Juan Manuel Rudas). It was the first time that volunteers from this place were teaching at this public school in Honda. This made the kids even more excited in our classes, and their gratitude was even greater. Working with the kids and teachers from this school was very special.

Honda is also filled with culture. Walking through the town is like walking through a museum, thanks to its colonial architecture and colorful street scenes. The local culture is very vibrant and easy to notice—local music, dance, food, clothing, and traditions can be found everywhere. There are many public holidays during which the local or national culture is celebrated and appreciated. This made it especially fun for me to learn about the culture of Honda, Tolima, and Colombia in general. The people of Honda are very proud of their culture, and they loved to tell me all about it and answer all the questions I had. The cultural exchange I experienced was incredibly valuable. I felt like an active participant in the local culture, not just a spectator.

During this volunteering experience, I felt very happy. Spending time with these amazing kids was so much fun. They are curious, enthusiastic, kind, helpful, and funny. I felt incredibly fulfilled by the work I did, especially when I saw the kids improve and get excited about learning English. I could really feel the gratitude and appreciation from the kids, parents, and teachers.

It was also the best way for me to improve my Spanish.

Finally, a big thank-you to Hugo and Soth for making these experiences possible. Because of the work you do, you're having such a positive impact on the children from the schools. You've been so helpful and supportive, even from the other side of the world. It was great to meet you in person at the Bilingual festival!
