Description
Welcome to Our Hilltop Haven in Reinheim, Germany!
Hello, Workawayers! We’re a small family of three, Alex, Franzi and Otto—us and our little one, born in October 2024—living in a cozy house on a hill in Reinheim, Germany, just a stone’s throw from vibrant Darmstadt, Frankfurt, Heidelberg and Aschaffenburg (all between 30-1hr by car). After a year of calling this peaceful spot home (we moved from bustling Berlin!), we’re excited to share our slice of paradise with travelers who love nature, good food, and a warm, family-oriented vibe.
What We Love About Our Place
Our home sits atop a hill with a sprawling 1000sqm backyard, bursting with apple trees, an elder tree, and a thriving tomato patch. Soon, we’ll be welcoming chickens to our little homestead, adding fresh eggs to our table! The views from our hill are calming and beautiful—think rolling greenery. Whether you’re sipping coffee under the apple trees or tending to the garden, there’s a sense of calm and connection to nature here that’s hard to beat. Just 5min walk you'll be on the fields nearing a big forest. Our lifestyle leans 70% carnivore, so expect hearty, protein-packed meals (often paired with our homegrown veggies) and lively conversations around the dinner table.
Why You’ll Love Reinheim
Reinheim is a charming small town with a big heart, nestled in the scenic Odenwald region. It’s perfect for those who crave a mix of tranquility and adventure. You can hike or (mountain) bike through lush forests, explore quaint villages, or visit local farms and markets for fresh produce. Just 30 minutes away, Frankfurt offers a vibrant city fix—museums, restaurants, and nightlife galore. Closer to home, you’ll find cozy cafés, historic sites, and friendly locals who make you feel right at home. It sits next to the "Bergstraße", mountain street translated, that is known for it's wine region - here the Riesling originates from and you can do a lot of fantastic wine tastings in towns with fully in tact half-timbered house city centers. Whether you’re into outdoor adventures or cultural day trips, Reinheim’s location is a perfect base.

We follow a 70% carnivore diet, focusing on high-quality, nutrient-dense foods, and we’d love to share insights into this unique lifestyle, including meal prep and sourcing local meats. Our 1000sqm backyard is a haven of nature, featuring apple and elder trees that provide seasonal fruits for jams, juices, or desserts. We’re soon welcoming chickens to our home, so you can get hands-on experience with animal care, learning about sustainable practices like egg collection and coop maintenance. If you’re interested in gardening or permaculture, you can help tend our trees and garden, discovering how we integrate eco-conscious habits into daily life.
With our extensive travel background, we love engaging in meaningful cultural exchanges. You’ll hear stories from our global adventures, and we’re eager to learn about your culture, traditions, and experiences. Whether it’s swapping recipes, practicing languages (we speak German, English, and bits of others from our travels), or sharing travel tips, our home is a hub for mutual learning and connection.
**Exploring Reinheim and the Bergstraße Wine Region**
Reinheim, nestled in the heart of the Bergstraße, is a gateway to one of Germany’s most picturesque wine regions. The Bergstraße, known as the “Springtime Route,” stretches along the western edge of the Odenwald forest, famous for its mild climate, early-blooming almond and cherry blossoms, and rolling vineyards. This small but prestigious wine region produces exceptional Rieslings, Müller-Thurgau, and Pinot varieties, with many family-run wineries offering tastings and tours. As a Workawayer, you can join us on visits to local vineyards, where you’ll learn about German winemaking traditions and savor regional wines paired with hearty local dishes.
The region is steeped in history and charm, with nearby towns like Heppenheim and Bensheim boasting half-timbered houses, medieval castles, and vibrant markets. You can explore hiking trails in the Odenwald, bike along the Bergstraße’s scenic routes, or visit historic sites like the Auerbach Castle. Reinheim itself has a strong community spirit, with local bakeries, cafes, and seasonal festivals that we’d love to introduce you to.
**Local Events in 2025**
- **Bergstraße Wine Festival (Weinfest)**: Held in nearby towns like Bensheim or Heppenheim, this festival celebrates the region’s wines with tastings, live music, and local food stalls. It’s a fantastic way to connect with locals and experience the festive atmosphere.
- **Reinheim Summer Market**: A community event featuring local artisans, food vendors, and live performances, perfect for immersing yourself in the town’s welcoming vibe.
- **Odenwald Hiking Festivals**: Organized hikes through the region’s trails, often with guided tours highlighting the area’s flora, fauna, and history.
These events provide opportunities to mingle with locals, practice German, and soak up the region’s traditions. We can attend together or guide you to explore independently.
**Life with a Small Baby and Pets**
As a young family, our daily rhythm includes caring for our small baby, and we’d appreciate Workawayers who are comfortable with a family-friendly environment. You might assist with light household tasks or playtime with our little one, giving you a chance to bond and learn about parenting in a multicultural household. Once our chickens arrive, you’ll help with their care, gaining hands-on experience in small-scale farming. Our home is a warm, dynamic space where you’ll feel like part of the family while contributing to our daily routines.
**Connecting with the Community**
Reinheim’s tight-knit community makes it easy to connect with locals. You can join us at the weekly farmers’ market to meet producers, practice German, or pick up fresh ingredients for our meals. We’ll introduce you to neighbors who share our passion for sustainable living, and you might even join local clubs or workshops, such as cooking classes or gardening groups. The Bergstraße’s wine culture also fosters a sense of community, with winery events and seasonal celebrations that welcome newcomers.

Help
We’re a small family of three, including our baby born in October 2024, living in a beautiful hilltop home in Reinheim, Germany. We’re looking for friendly, reliable Workawayers to join us and lend a hand with a variety of tasks that keep our home and garden thriving. Here’s what we’d love your help with:
Babysitting: Spend time with our little one, engaging in gentle play, reading, or soothing them while we tackle other tasks. Experience with infants is a plus, but a warm, patient attitude is what matters most. This might involve a few hours a day, depending on our schedule.
Cooking: Help prepare hearty meals that align with our 70% carnivore diet (think meat-heavy dishes with fresh veggies from our garden). If you love cooking, you can get creative with our homegrown tomatoes or share your favorite recipes to add some variety to our table. We’d also appreciate help with meal prep or cleanup.
Cleaning: While we have a cleaner who visits every two weeks, we’d love assistance with light day-to-day tidying—think washing dishes, organizing, or keeping common areas neat. This helps keep our home a cozy, welcoming space for everyone.
Gardening: Our 1000sqm backyard is a work in progress, with apple trees, an elder tree, and a tomato patch. We need help with planting, weeding, harvesting, or preparing the garden for our upcoming chicken coop. If you enjoy getting your hands dirty and have a knack for outdoor projects, this is for you!
We typically ask for 4-5 hours of help per day, 5 days a week, leaving plenty of time for you to explore Reinheim, hike in the Odenwald, or take day trips to nearby Frankfurt. In return, you’ll enjoy home-cooked meals, a comfy place to stay, and a chance to connect with our family and share stories from our travels to 45+ countries. We’re excited to welcome Workawayers who are enthusiastic, open-minded, and ready to dive into our little homestead life!Languages
