    Description

Our needs for extra help (Workawayers) is during late spring and summer months.

Katharina is a transplant from Germany and came to Vermont via California. Glenn has been in Vermont since the 1970s. Presently, our animals are: dogs Bela & Bernie, cats Tesla & Cosmo and Greta & Hedy, a team of Haflinger horses and four piglets. Having lived in various countries ourselves throughout our lives, we love meeting people from different countries and really value the cultural exchange.

Overlooking the White Mountains in the distance, our place is nestled into the Green Mountains of Vermont, high on a hillside, variously known as Blood Mountain or Michigan Hill. We are three miles outside of the little town of Washington and about 18 miles south of the state capitol, Montpelier.

Workawayers will stay in a cabin, aka the "Hobbit House,” where we lived for two winters while building our house. It is off the grid and has a terrace with a view, outdoor shower and a sauna. Our house is a barn structure from the 1800s that Glenn and his friends moved and rebuilt. Our land spans about 40 acres, bordering over 2,000 acres of wildlife preserve. We also have a pond that is great for swimming on those hot summer days. Sharing our love for nature and our love for this piece of land is one of the many reasons we love hosting folks from all around the world.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Our area is off the beaten path, rural and very beautiful. Previous workawayers who had a good time with us have really plugged into our daily life on the mountain; they love the peace and quiet that comes with living in a rural area. People who join us on our adventure are generally speaking animal and nature lovers and value the opportunity to connect with our animals and learn about living on a farm. We have a small pond for swimming, plenty of trails for hiking, and you are welcome to borrow our kayaks. For those who come without a vehicle and/or the ability to drive, we are happy to take our workawayers around so they get to see the area. Whether it's a lively pizza night on a farm close by, a farmer's market, a kayak trip or a sports game - it all depends on the interests of our travelers.

We continue to focus on keeping newly cleared areas open for future pastures. Weed whacking will be an essential part of your daily chores. So you should be comfortable using the weed whacker an hour or so each day. Katharina has some veggies and berry plots, as well as perennial flowers and various fruit and nut trees. Glenn may appreciate help with his creative projects or with caring for the team of horses. Household chores such as cooking and cleaning are shared and are not part of the exchange, as those chores need to be done no matter what situation you live in.

We live on a farm and need to care for animals. Workawayers need to be ok with rising early to get chores done and also not shy away from physical work. We are looking for hard-working, responsible self starters who are able to follow directions and complete a task when left alone.

    Accommodation

You will be staying in a cabin about 150 ft away from the main house. The cabin has running water, outdoor shower, fridge, two-burner stove, wood heat. No WiFi at the cabin. Arrangements can be made to use WiFi on the porch of the main house.

Katharina is vegetarian, but Glenn eats meat sometimes. Depending on individual needs, some meals can be shared, or, if preferred, you can cook your own meals. Alternative arrangements can be made.

Length of stay: We prefer for people to stay for 3-4 weeks so they can really immerse themselves in the experience and get into the swing of day-to-day living on the farm. But we also look at the first week as a "getting-to-know-each-other" time to determine if this arrangement works for everyone.

    What else ...

We are a 20-minute drive away from Sage Mountain, a well-known herbal retreat center established by Rosemary Gladstar. Montpelier, about 35 minutes away, offers an eclectic farmer’s market every weekend during the summer months. Montreal is three hours away as is Boston. There are all kinds of festivals throughout summer, something for every taste, and lots of hiking trails and swimming holes. This is a area rural. There is NO public transportation. To explore the area on your own you will need to have your own transportation.
