    Description

Hi! We’re Helmer and Lorena, a Colombian couple living in San Gil, Santander, with our 6-year-old son, Matías. We're both teachers and experienced hosts through Couchsurfing and Workaway.

We’re looking for a female Workawayer or a couple to stay with us for 1–3 weeks. The main goal is to help Matías practice English through play, conversation, and everyday activities. No need to be a professional teacher—just be kind, patient, and ready to share time with a child.

In return, you'll be part of our family life, improve your Spanish, discover Colombian culture and food, and even join some of my classes to meet locals. We’ll support and guide you the whole time to make sure you feel comfortable and happy.

Check out our profile and let us know if you're interested and when you might arrive! 😊

The volunteer will have the opportunity to live with a local warm family, learn or practice a new language “Spanish” and also interact with my students where the place I work. San Gil is the touristic capital of Santander, so many nature and extreme outdoor activities wait for you. At about 50 minutes by bus you can reach the Chicamocha Canyon, the biggest in Colombia and one the the best in America.

Our son Matías speaks English, and that’s something really important to us as parents—we want to keep him in regular contact with the language. Of course, he also speaks Spanish.

Here’s a general idea of what you’d do on weekday mornings:
You’d spend the first two hours of the day with Matías, helping him get ready for school and take him there (school starts at 7:00). This routine would happen a maximum of three times a week.

Matías usually wakes up around 5:50 am and follows this routine: shower, organize his bedroom, have breakfast, brush his teeth, get dressed in his uniform, and head to school. He knows how to do everything on his own but sometimes needs a bit of support or guidance.

My wife and I usually prepare meals for Matías and also for the volunteer, but you're welcome to help us out in the kitchen if you like—though it’s not a requirement.

After 7:00 am, your time is your own! You can relax, explore San Gil or nearby towns, or enjoy your personal time at home.

In the afternoons, Matías has finishes school at 5:00 pm. So you'd be help us to pick him up, take him home and you’d spend time with him up to 7:00 pm before bedtime. This is a great moment to help him practice English through conversation, games, or reading—anything that helps improve his communication skills.

On weekends, we often go out as a family—visiting friends, trying local restaurants, exploring nearby towns, or spending time with relatives. You’re absolutely welcome to join us! It’s a great way to see what local life is like and enjoy the culture.

Also, I can take you to visit my father’s farm, just 45 minutes away. There, you can learn about the coffee-making process and even experience harvesting coffee beans directly from the plantation.

There is always something interesting to do in San Gil. You can visit several towns nearby, each with something great to visit and fall in love. You can go hiking, bike riding, paragliding, caving, rafting, rappelling, go swimming in the rivers, and more. But also you can join me at work and develop educative projects with my students.
