Description
We are a couple who have been working and traveling around the national parks in the US for over 3 years now. We are interested in buying land in our future and using it in a sustainable way to feed or generate profit to donate to those who are in need. Through Workaway, we hope we can further our knowledge on sustainable living, farming and animal care while immersing ourselves in the beauty of the natural world around us.

We had a great time with Gordan. He was very hospitable and generous. He took us boating, snorkeling, and frequently drop us off to go hiking, swimming, or take the ferry to St John. I had an amazing time! I stayed there for 6 months. The people were great, I got to learn a lot, and everything you could possibly need is provided during your stay. You could actually show up with nothing and they can provide all the essentials you’d need. I really enjoyed the freedom to choose your own schedule and the type of labor you want to… read more do. The amenities are fantastic; they have a sauna, gym, music room, kayaks and lots of things for entertainment. There are some awesome events and people frequently going into Richmond for concerts, museums and rock climbing. We also went hiking in the Shenandoah Mountains. They even let me build a hiking trail in the back of the property so we could explore more out there, too. not without its challenges. You need to be able to self-motivate. They do not always hold your hand, you will need to show initiative when it comes to labor. Everyone was willing to show me what to do; whether it’s cooking, dishes, gardening, or animal care, but you have to show an interest and find out who is informed in the areas that you want to work in and learn from them. Although it’s common to find groups of people hanging out or playing games, it’s also common for the community to go through phases where people are feeling more like being secluded, so if you need constant socializing this might not be for you. On the other hand, if you’re more prone to being socially anxious or secluded, you’ll never feel judged or pressured to socialize. They’re also always open to new people starting events like art nights, game nights, movie nights, etc. So if you want to gather everyone to socialize, that’s probably your best bet. My friendships there took time to develop, so you might not find an immediate connection. Not everyone is going to immediately introduce themselves to you and it’s the norm for people to walk past each other without acknowledging each other. It’s not a cold shoulder, so don’t read too much into it. Everyone is very kind-hearted, but this is their home (you probably don’t wave to your roommates every time you walk by them). The summer is extremely humid and there are lots of bugs. It’s in the country after all. Mosquitoes own the property and ants will come in and stay with you rent free. That being said, the incredible light show put on by the fireflies makes up for it and the sweet summer rain is to die for. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience for me and my partner, and we will be going out of my way to visit the friends we made there for years to come.
