Coolheaded wanderer, searching for the answers of life's big questions, but not in a hurry.

After returning from an incredible experience volunteering in the highlands of Scotland, that filled my heart with joy and granted me spectacular lessons and memories, I knew my life would never be the same. Those five months gave me extra motivation to continue exploring other environments, so since then I have volunteered in Morocco at a language school, at a temporary housing for immigrant youth in France, as well as in the construction of a straw-bale house in Belgium, and am now looking for the next adventures.

Some of my strongest passions involve learning languages, understanding cultures, and using this knowledge to have deeper and more meaningful interactions with others, or even discovering more about myself.

What an interesting experience! I stayed a month in Attaouia and have memories to cherish forever.
I had the opportunity to assist in classes with 3 different groups of bright and very motivated students, led by incredible teachers. My contribution came mostly as an extra set of eyes and aid during activities, memorization tips, some game ideas,… read more or the odd words and concepts that are not usually present in textbooks (e.g., “second cousin once removed”).
In addition, I had one-to-one lessons with students of English and French, of drastically different levels and ages. I could start a day playing Pictionary with a 6y.o. that had only learned the names of fruits and vegetables at that point, one hour later be deep into a debate about the conditions of the public school system and end the day having an advanced student practice new vocabulary by teaching me how TikTok works. I was a bit confused with the variation at the start, but the teachers at the school and the other volunteers have been the most helpful, so I was able to adapt to it soon enough and have a great time with the students. I have learned more than I taught, and I’m grateful for this opportunity. What began as a concern, ended up being one of the most enriching parts of this adventure.
About the living experience, I can confirm some of the points given on the other reviews – great couscous on Fridays, short distance between the school and the apartment, very pleasant rooftop at the school to relax in the sun, many shops, places to eat, very nice prices overall. I would also like to add some. As mentioned in the description it is a rather small city, it is also quite flat, so great for doing everything on foot. I was pleasantly surprised that during my short stay I had no instance when I felt unsafe, of course while being cautious, but still being able to walk back from the school in the evening with no fear, casually take my phone out of my bag on the street and such things one can’t so easily do in a larger city. Also good to keep in mind given the size of the city is that you see your students all the time, everywhere, so it can be important to be mindful of your habits at all times.
Another thing to take into consideration is that being a foreigner in such a small city attracts a lot of attention, good and bad. Be prepared for the catcalling and people asking for money, but also to have many enjoyable interactions with complete strangers who want to practice a few phrases they know in English and get to know you a little. I had a few uncomfortable situations – nothing is perfect – but all in all I have found the people from Attaouia to be very kind, warm and welcoming, the city quiet and charming, and the school an interesting gathering of extraordinary students and staff. I’ll end this book-long review with a shoutout to Ahmed who is the real MVP of this whole deal and everyone going there to volunteer should buy him a cookie!!!!
