  • Description

We are two teachers from Switzerland who recently quit their job to enjoy a slow life and connect with people while traveling and volunteering!

You can follow our adventure: @on_partira_vers_lest

In Switzerland, Christelle was a full-time teacher and Mathieu part-time teacher and farmer. We both taught French and History and Christelle also English to begginers. We worked with teenagers with behaviour or studying difficulties. That allowed us to develop our social skills and create trustful relationships with our students. Christelle also developped different projects at her school to improve the well-being of the teenagers, the inclusiveness of the school and the dialogues between adults and teenagers. She participated in several winter camps and organized a school trip abroad for her students.

As said before, Mathieu was also a farmer. After helping his dad many years during university, he completed an apprenticeship and took care of a 30-hectare farm with his two other brothers. They grew cereals, had milk cows and many fruit trees (Mathieu knows how to prune them). They decided to have a more respectful system for their land, cattles and themselves and switched to a bio-alternative. They opened a shop to create a local food network and grinded their flour in the farm with a traditional stone mill.
Christelle also lived on a farm with her brother and her parents. She knows how to take care of cows. At home, they had 4 goats and a baby goat called Pizza, a donkey, a poney, rabbits, and multiple cats! Ostie, their dog, is 4 years old and brings a lot of happiness in the house.

We have known each other for 11 years and we share many interests: we like going hiking in the mountains. We usually bivouac to be closer to nature. We sing in the same choir we created with friends and we are passionnate about cinema. Our first long-term trip together was last year. We went to Georgia and Armenia by bus and train (the bus to go through Turkey took us 26 hours!). We enjoyed meeting new people, learning and sharing about different cultures. After that experience, we knew we wanted to quit our jobs and take some time for ourselves.
We spent this summer toghether in a mountain pasture where we learned to milk goats and produce cheese. We would love to reexperience something similar one day.

Mathieu is a very sporty person: floorball, wallclimbing, ski... He was a ski instructor during his studies. With friends, he created a summer camp for children of nearby villages. In 10 years, 500 children have enjoyed the activities displayed at the camp.
During Easter Break, he had the opportunity to accompagny some students on a sailing trip in the South of France. During a week they learned to sail and lived all together in community. He would love to do it again!
He hates wearing sunglasses and makes jokes that he believes to be good.

Christelle is more creative than sporty: she does embroidery and collage. She also enjoys taking photographs. She gave English classes to a group of Chinese teenagers during a summer camp in the moutains of Switzerland. She is also involved in the organization of different choirs where she lived. During 4 years, she ran a bar in a big summer festival near her home village. She was in charge of 30 volunteers during the week of the festival. Before being a teacher, she worked as a pharmacy assistant, bartender and waitress: she has always enjoyed social contacts in different context.
She hates thermal baths but loves dancing what she calls "contemporary dance" which means doing random moves in rythm!

Our project for now is to travel and enjoy a slow life while meeting new people, learning and sharing skills together. Taking care of a mountain pasture or a mountain hut during the high season would be one of our dreams.
