  • Description

    Hi,

I’m Dan, I am a qualified carpenter, former journalist and a charity worker – which is a slightly unusual combination, I realise!

I’ve recently arrived in Portugal after spending the last 18 months converting a Mercedes Sprinter van into a cosy home on wheels that I’m now living in full time.

It would be wonderful to find a Workaway by the sea where I can be part of a vibrant community, get stuck into working outside on the land, or help out on any maintenance or building projects.

If either my carpentry skills or background in writing and editing could be useful, I’d love to share these with my Workaway hosts and/or fellow Workaway-ers, I’m also used to farm work and labouring, so I can generally get stuck in wherever it would be helpful!

The Workaway site suggests to say a bit about your personality, so here goes this awkward bit... I am: thoughtful, engaging, kind, hard-working, adventurous, enthusiastic, helpful, creative, generous, practical, independent.

In terms of my interests and passions, a big part of my van-life dream is to get half decent at surfing! (I’ve built a special slot in my van for my surfboard, which I’m disproportionately pleased with :D) I love walking, camping and hiking, in Spain and Portugal I’ve previously walked along several different routes of the Camino de Santiago. I also do a bit of yoga and meditation, both of which I’d like to explore in more depth. Another long-term goal is to learn Spanish, so if there are any opportunities for language exchanges that would be amazing too!

I have stayed with a number of Workaway hosts before, in Ireland, Wales and California – on a sheep farm, with oyster fishermen, at a self-sufficient farming community, and on a vineyard-horse ranch. The last few months while I’ve been converting my van, I’ve also been doing informal work exchanges with the same ethos as Workaway -- in Northern Ireland and currently where I’m staying in Portugal, a couple of hours north of Lisbon.

I’m inspired by building positive connections and community and would be keen, if it’s a good fit for everyone, to stay for at least a couple of months. If this and the above sounds like it could work for you, please say hello!

    Dan
