Γεια! Hello! Здраво!

My name is Galatea, which in case you're wondering is an ancient greek name :) I was born and raised in Athens, but currently I'm living in Thessaloniki (located at Northern Greece). Having a degree in filmmaking/screenwriting, right now I'm trying to do my first baby steps into the industry, but I can truly say about myself that I'm a passionate storyteller. One thing that I love about cinema is that while watching films I got to know other cultures, understand the people around me better, increase my empathy.

Except for storytelling, I'm passionate about linguistics (especially when it's about slavic languages), the history of the Balkans and Eastern Europe, ethnography, anthropology. I'm fascinated by folk art and I love discovering traditional songs, music, myths and tales, costumes etc. from all over the Balkans, Eastern Europe, Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East... Folk art to me is a huge inspiration. I am a member of a traditional dancing group in Thessaloniki and I simply love dancing and singing in the traditional way. I also love reading literature, listening to music or just wandering around or even better going out in the nature for some stroll or hiking.

As well as I've grown up in a big city, now as a young adult I'm longing to - at least try to - live a simpler life, closer to nature, knowing that I can be an independent person, believing in the dignity of manual labor, respecting the environment and the biodiversity, as well as the cultural diversity, of our world.

I would be very excited to meet new people, visit new places and acquire new experiences that will not only help me be a better person, but even more that they will provide me with pure inspiration and help me develop my artistic identity.

As a filmmaker student I am able and eager to shot and produce short films, fiction as well as documentary (I'm willing to show you some videos of mine on demand).

I'm speaking english with ease, I know Russian at an intermediate level, and some basic french too. Currently, I'm trying to learn by myself at least the basics of Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian. I could teach my native language using the arts (literature, music, cinema etc).

In respect of agricultural and farming occupation, which also interest me, I am willing to learn as much as I have the opportunity to learn. My only prior experience connected with it is my one-month contribution to the rose harvesting of a small, organic rose producing farm in Central Bulgaria. In general, I would say I am a very optimistic, patient and helpful person, ready to work close to nature.

Sooo... ROSE HARVEST 2023, from the beginning till the very end 🌹🌹🌹🌹

This was a dream of mine for a long time, and now it is definitely an experience to cherish and look back on. With Dany and Johanna you really get to experience the whole thing from a truly local perspective, far from folkloric and touristy ways of approaching it. Except for… read more picking, Dany and Joanna are always keen on talking about and explaining to you all the other aspects of rose farming and producing goods from the flowers (and herbs too), e.g. taking you and making a "mini-tour" for you in the distillery they work with to distill rose water and oil and to dry rose petals and buds. And this is the whole point of Workaway I guess.

Rose picking is not a difficult procedure in itself; you learn how to do it very quickly and you will get to see yourself getting better and better day by day. Still, keep in mind that in its essence it is pure fieldwork, so it can be demanding, especially during the peak of the blossoming, and particularly if you're not already used to fieldwork. That being said, this experince really makes you realize and value the labour that is enclosed into the goods that we so easily consume in our everyday life. Plus, you will get to share all this with other, wonderful, volunteers, so there are going to be a lot of hilarious stories to recount in the evenings, as well as after you leave the place. Although I know it can be tiring sometimes, I'd strongly recommend to any workawayer considering this workaway to go for the whole of the harvesting season; it's such an interesting thing to witness how the fields are giving more and more day by day and then slowly "falling to sleep" again until next May.

Dany, Joanna and little Ani make you feel part of their family from the very first moment you meet them (btw the breakfast, or better to say brunch, time after harvesting is one of the top times in the day, no exaggeration). Nevertheless, Dany and Joanna always try to make sure you get your intimacy moments time and space wise. The village they live in is beautifully located in the rose valley, so during your free time, which is a good deal of, you can swim or just relax next to a big lake, find some nice spots overlooking the valley and the not so distant mountains, bicycle through the fields (I actually learned how to bicycle thanks to the family and my beloved volunteer team, and I'm so excited about it), or even hitchhike to some interesting sights close by. Moreover, living for some time in the village provides you with an insight into today's people and life in rural Bulgaria - but I'm not gonna spoil more regarding this subject; it definately worths it to go there and live it by yourself!
