Travelling
Description
Finding a nice cadence in life is lovely. My son and I are traveling and looking for experiences of exchange and friendships. We love the outdoors and sustainability. We have cared for many animals and gardened. I have skills with tools - renovation/restoration/construction, landscape restoration (or can mow a lawn), and manual labor. We are kind, respectful, and tidy with a good work ethic.
I am a single mother and a PhD candidate at the Australian National University. My son is 14 years old, we both love a good conversation and friends as well as quiet. We are traveling for a year while I write my thesis and he is homeschooling. Writing and homeschooling only take so much of the day, we would love to fill part of our day doing something entirely different and taking part in an interesting project with other people.
While we are currently originating from Canberra, Australia, we are from the Pacific Northwest of the US - I am from the Seattle area and my son was born in Montana. We enjoy the outdoors, experiencing other cultures, hanging out with/caring for animals, and we have a green thumb. We like running, hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, skiing, kayaking, rafting, paddle boarding, body surfing, arts, yoga, reading, crafts, cooking, caring for animals, environmental restoration, being outside, experiencing life ...my son also loves sailing - I do as well, I am just not as experienced at it as he is.
A bit more about me:
My research work is looking at social shifts and changes in land transmission in response to mineral exploration and other overlapping conjunctures of development and the desire for development in rural/remote Papua New Guinea (with a gender lens).
Places I have lived:
All over the US west and a couple short stays on the east coast; Papua New Guinea; Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands; New Zealand; and Australia.
Off grid - we have lived off grid with solar, hauled water, plowing roads, and wood heat.
Work I have done:
Social Scientist currently; biodiversity and conservation biologist; hydrologist; Grand Canyon River Guide (rowing boats down the canyon); wood finishing and refinishing and small amounts of finish carpentry; backpacking guide in the Wyoming wilderness.Interests

Carpentry and renovation- it has been a few years because I shifted my focus, but I have renovated houses including; plastering, sheet-rocking, mudding and taping, wood refinishing, window glazing, installing some types of flooring, some framing, painting, tile, some finish carpentry, power tools - circular saw, table saw, jig saw, saws all, jointer, planer, sander, drill, drill press, grinder... I could dust off my skills and learn new. At one point I could even weld, cast metal, and blacksmith but those are very specific, and welds need a competent welder - but I can be helpful in these tasks - prepping metal or whatnot. I enjoy manual labour.
Animal care - I grew up with horses, large dogs, pigs, and cats. I have also had goats and chickens. I am very empathetic and good with animals and I adore them. My son has had a dog, some goats, and mice. He has looked after chickens, dogs, cats and he enjoys their company.
Labour - mucking barns, splitting wood, shoveling/digging, planting, carrying heavy things, stacking hay...making raised garden beds, sifting soil...
Photography / art/ craft / sculpture / installation art...poetry... imagination
Cooking - I enjoy cooking
Children - I am traveling with my 14 year old son (I looked for family membership but did not really see how to sign up as a mother and son duo) we are both kind and social.
