Hello!

My name is Lucy, and I'm from the Czech Republic. After more than 8 years of working in the tech industry for both local and international companies, I decided to take a career break for a few months to spend it in a meaningful way. I am a passionate and adventurous person eager to explore new cultures and contribute my skills to impactful projects around the world.

What motivates me is the opportunity to connect with people from diverse backgrounds, exchange skills and stories, and gain new perspectives. I enjoy being part of a community and making a meaningful contribution. Helping others and seeing the positive impact of my work brings me immense happiness.

I’m passionate about creativity and problem-solving, whether it's finding a new approach to a challenge, designing something, or learning a new skill. I am also deeply motivated by sustainability and am always eager to learn more about eco-friendly practices and ways to live harmoniously with the environment.

I am a quick learner with a strong work ethic, and I’m always up for a new challenge. Here are some of the skills I can bring:

-> Gardening and Farming: I grew up helping in my grandma's garden, which was filled with fruit plants and trees, as well as on her small farm with chickens, rabbits, and ducks. After having my own garden for a while, I started exploring permaculture. I enjoy being in nature and around animals.

-> Hospitality and Customer Service: Having worked in various hospitality settings (gym reception, florist shop, etc.), I am comfortable interacting with guests, handling front desk duties, and assisting with day-to-day operations. My professional experience helps me build deep empathy for people and understand their needs.

-> DIY Projects: I have taken a wide range of crafty courses and workshops, which has helped me be creative in DIY projects.

-> Organizational Skills: I enjoy organizing events and connecting people from different backgrounds. I am also strong in planning, organizing, and managing projects.

This was my first Workaway experience, and I didn’t know what to expect—but I’m very grateful that I started here in Dafins.

There is a daily schedule, which you can adjust if needed with Markus.

There are daily tasks that need to be done every day, and the rest are usually discussed during the morning meeting. Typically, Markus divides the tasks, and Workawayers complete them on their own—unless they need help or an introduction first from him. This part was a bit different from what I expected as a newbie. I thought we would work more closely on tasks and projects together with Markus, so at first, I felt a bit more like a worker than part of a community - but I guess this was my misunderstanding. Over time, I got used to the rhythm and found my own flow. Be prepared to be tired during the first days (if you are not used to physical work), I was happy napping after lunch during the first week :D But my body got used to it, I got more stronger, which I was super happy about.
Markus is open to listen for recommendations or projects you would like to work on, so don't be shy - we reorganized the garage and tools area when mine and Anna's little OCD could not handle the chaos anymore :D

My goal was to feel more connected to nature, and this place definitely helped me achieve that. There are beautiful hikes around the house with little waterfalls. If we wanted to go further, Markus was happy to give us a lift one way, and we usually got back using public transport or by hitchhiking—which felt super easy and safe around Dafins. However, getting to the Swiss side was a bit tricky with public transport, and I wished I had a car to be more flexible.

In terms of cultural exchange, I initially expected to hang out and do more activities with Markus, but later I understood he’s a busy guy.
We usually hung out more with the other workers, which turned out to be super nice—especially on cosy autumn evenings around the fireplace, with board games and deep conversations :)

For the food, Markus does the grocery shopping, always asking for what needs to be bought, and workawayers cook for themselves. Sometimes there were little tensions about what should/should not be bought in what frequency (due to the budget, which is understandable), so I recommend setting the expectations and needs from the very beginning to avoid this :) Markus buys BIO and vegetarian products, which was a nice test for me to learn that I can survive without meat in full strength. We made our own bread, pizza or jams from the fruits we found in the garden, this was very fulfilling for me and I could not stop eating this super delicious bread with homemade jams, I went crazy about it - BUT thanks to the physical work I did not gain any weight yaaay :D

There may be moments when you feel a bit frustrated—that’s pretty normal with Workaway in general. Different expectations, new people, new house, new rules, new culture… In such moments, I recommend having an open honest and constructive conversation with Markus. He’s willing to listen and adjust things so that they work for both sides. Reflecting back, I wish I had done that more often—something I’ll carry forward as a learning for my next Workaway adventure.

Overall, I’d be happy to come back one day—hopefully with a car :)

Lucie helped with my project for 4 weeks, and I couldn't have asked for better support. She was incredibly reliable, responsible, and hardworking. Not only did she keep everything in the house clean and organized, but she also worked alongside another Workawayer, Anna, to clean and reorganize my garage, shed, and other spaces.
