Hello!
We are Marina and Pau, a couple from Catalonia, a northern region of Spain. We met starting the bachelor in Biochemistry almost six years ago and since then we’ve been sharing a lot of experiences.

Now that we’ve finished our studies, we feel like it’s the perfect time to live an experience abroad, we are really looking forward to connecting with new people and learning different ways of doing as getting to know different cultures and hearing the experiences of new and interesting people is something we really appreciate.

We both love to travel and being surrounded by nature with all it has to offer, so we try to take any opportunity we can to explore all the incredible places we can find around us, be it through hikes and backpacking trips through the mountain or through road trips along the coast with our small (but comfy) camperized car.

We share an adventurous spirit and an open-minded attitude and warm and friendly personality. We are hard and flexible workers and are eager to learn about lifestyles to which we are not used to. We also share our love and deep care for the biodiversity and are trying to learn ways to be more responsible with the environment in our day to day life.

We arrived in December 2024 and stayed for three weeks. Despite planning the trip on short notice, communication with the foundation was very effective, and they made the arrival process smooth, even providing transportation information from the airport. We were lucky that they happened to be leaving some adopted dogs at the airport, so we were… read more able to catch a ride to the village with Chris, a charming local who also helps care for the dogs.

The apartment we stayed in was cozy and simple but had all the basic amenities needed for a comfortable stay. One thing to note is that the water heater is solar-powered, so if it’s cloudy, the water can be a bit chilly. That said, the indoor heater quickly warmed us up afterward. A sweet detail worth mentioning is that the neighbors have an adorable dog, Rex, who would follow us everywhere. He’s a free spirit and a lovely companion.

At the shelter, we had a wonderful time with the dogs. They’re all lovely and very affectionate, most of them are used to humans. Of course, a few are understandably shy or scared, given what they’ve been through.
The work is exactly as described in the WA post: cleaning and feeding the animals, taking them to the vet, and so on. With a bit of initiative, we also built a doghouse from scratch and fixed a few things around the shelter. A very important part of the job is taking the dogs for walks, as many of them are anxious from being confined and really appreciate the exercise. After working, we’d return home tired but with full hearts.

That said, be prepared for poor hygiene conditions in the common areas of the shelter, like the bathroom and kitchen, and also the car. If you prefer to eat at home, they also offer the option of providing you with a meal allowance.

The area is beautiful, full of olive trees and stunning views of rural Greece. There are some amazing places to visit nearby, like Ancient Olympia (the birthplace of the Olympic Games) with its impressive museum, the Temple of Apollo Epicurius, and Messene. We rented a car at a reasonable price since motorbike rentals were unavailable in the winter. The drive was gorgeous, taking us through a very mountainous region.

We’ll take away many cherished memories from this experience. It’s been a pleasure to contribute as much as we could and to pour our energy into the project, these dogs truly deserve it.

Pau en Marina hebben zich tot het uiterste ingezet voor 'onze dieren en onze shelter'.
Zo spontaan als zij zich aanmeldden en zo snel als het ging, zo anders en serieus waren ze op de job. Zij stonden op voor onze dieren, ze werkten heel hard (ook toen onze vaste hulp uitviel, waren ze niet te beroerd door te gaan tot hij weer terug was en hun… read more
