About me:

In early 2024, I embarked on a 24-month journey across Southern Africa, offering my time and expertise to NGOs, community projects, and small private enterprises—completely free of charge. My motivation is encapsulated in the quote, "Don't die with your music still in you." I am semi-retired and spend at least a month in each town or city I visit, immersing myself in local communities by volunteering, engaging in charity work, and sharing valuable skills.

With over 30 years of experience as a Journalist and TV Producer covering the African continent, I have gained deep insights into societal challenges and opportunities. These experiences have refined my ability to identify untapped potential and collaborate to create sustainable solutions. I am a critical thinker who thrives on the interplay between practical and intellectual endeavors, always seeking meaningful ways to contribute.

Skills & Expertise:

• Community Development & Sustainability: Passionate about fostering self-sufficient, eco-conscious communities, I take a hands-on approach to problem-solving and environmental preservation.
• Hospitality & Eco-Lodge Management: In 2015, I spearheaded a project in Magaliesburg, Gauteng, developing a guest lodge on a 3-hectare property. I managed design, construction, and eco-friendly initiatives, including river clean-ups, invasive species removal, and the creation of hiking and horse trails.
• Practical & DIY Skills: Skilled in general maintenance, repairs, and creative problem-solving, I bring practical expertise to any setting.
• Education & Mentorship: As a TEFL-certified educator with additional training in coaching and mentoring, I support individuals and groups in skill development.
• Media & Storytelling: With a background in journalism, communication, and storytelling, I can help projects gain visibility and impact.

My Workaway Offering:

I am willing to dedicate 4-5 hours per day to hands-on work, bringing energy and commitment to sharing my skills and knowledge. I travel with a purpose-built, off-grid camping trailer, allowing me to explore South Africa while remaining fully self-sufficient. However, I require a space to set up with access to clean water.

While I contribute my time and expertise freely, my offer does not extend to the use of my vehicle or financial resources.

I enjoy collaborating with people, listening to their stories, and sharing my own experiences. However, I also value solitude and time for reflection. Reading, writing, and meditation are essential to my personal well-being, allowing me to maintain balance.
