Hi! I’m currently in New Zealand

  • Description

Hello! My name is Sara, I'm 23, and I’m originally from the United States. I'm currently finishing up a year long stay in New Zealand where I have been working as a stargazing guide. I love the stars and the night sky- I completed my bachelor's in science in astrophysics about 2 years ago and after graduating from university I decided to pack my things and travel the world. I have a huge passion for science and STEM, but this simply translates to a love of learning in my day to day life. I like to figure out how things work, discover new ways of thinking about the world, learn from other's wisdom and experiences, and practice new skills and hobbies. I also have work experience as a sailing instructor, a barista, and in housekeeping. I have workaway/wwoofing experience in horse care, sheep care, gardening, landscaping and orchard care, and household chores (cleaning, cooking, washing, etc).

I'm an outgoing person, and in my freetime I love doing crafty and artsitic things like painting, drawing, playing music, and knitting. I'm a chronic collector of hobbies and always looking to learn new skills- I'd especially be interested in developing my skills in woodworking, blacksmithing, pottery, baking, and music. I grew up playing the cello and have been playing for around 15 years. I also play the guitar and mandolin, and before I left to travel I began learning the violin and piano. I love to bake, pickle, learn about fermentation, and make jams- I'd be keen to learn from somebody who uses these practices in their day to say life! I'd like to learn more about DIY and construction techniques so that one day when I have a home or farm, I can build my own additions like a chicken coop, shed, or remodel parts of my house. I have loads of creative energy I can pour into a project and I love seeing a task done right and through to the end. I can be a bit of a perfectionist at times, but this also makes me fantastic at detail oriented tasks.

One of the things I've loved about wwoofing/ workaway is the cultural exchange and taking a step into another person's life. I'm interesting in learning about what its really like to live in a country, not just what a tourist experiences. I'm also interested in learning about the reality of sustaining a lifestyle farm and living in a rural area. One day, I'd like to have a home where I can grow, make, or produce as many of my own goods as possible (eggs, butter, veggies, yarn, honey, candles etc). I think it's so satifying to be involved in the process of a product from start to finish! I want to learn more about preserving, pickling, making jams, fermenting sourdough and kombucha, and using the land and natural resources around me to their fullest. I want to learn about caring for chickens, bees, sheep, and goats. Harvesting honey, processing wool and spinning yarn, collect sheep's and goat's milk, making cheese, and all the traditional skills that could be used on a homestead.

My general skill set includes basic maintience and comfort with powertools, painting and sanding, gardening and lawncare, cooking, baking, housekeeping, and cleaning. I'm a hard worker, very community oriented, and more than happy to do a bit extra to help the household as a whole. I don't mind dirty work or physical labour- if I can bathe and eat a meal at the end of the day I am happy :).
Overall, I am a hard worker, a quick learner, and a lover of the small things in life. I hope this gives you a general overview of my mindset, skills, and interests, and please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions. Thank you!
