Description
Hello workaway community! My name is Sarah and I am 27 years old. I am from Ireland and grew up in a small village, but have spent the past 5 years living in the Netherlands studying and working. I am very lucky to currently be taking a break from work to travel in Latin America and Europe for 1 year, where I aim to see incredible nature, learn from local communities and get my hands dirty volunteering in workaway projects!

I am passionate about food, community and social connection, particularly local food systems, which I hope to contribute to in my workaways. I completed a Masters in Sustainable Development, where I focused on sustainable food system research. I then spent the past 2 years working for a university on European Union funded projects. In this work I collaborated with partners around Europe to tackle issues in our food system, primarily on how to support Short Food Supply Chains and Local Food Systems and address the issues of our globalized food system. Now that I have the academic background, I want to step away from the laptop and enter the farm and communities to improve my practical knowledge and skills!

My other personal interests include music, yoga and spending time with people. I am a social, independent and hardworking person who would love to contribute to grassroots initiatives and bring my positive energy to help those working hard everyday with the land to produce good food, and working to support and connect communities. You are my heroes!

I have completed several workaways on farms in Guatemala and Mexico in March-May 2025, and I am very grateful for my experiences there in which I learned a lot of new skills and cultures.

During my time travelling and volunteering I have gained a basic level of Spanish which I am constantly improving. I have also been learning German (my partner is German!) and am very interested to improve. I am a fluent native English speaker so would be very open to teaching and helping others learn!

I completed my Masters in Sustainable Development followed by 2 years of work experience as a European Research Projects Manager at a renowned Irish university. In my personal time, I was also the chairperson of a local food system organization and have been actively involved in a community-driven sustainability collective where I organized events, maintained a workspace and volunteered for various projects.
Through this I gained some relevant expertise and skills.

My time with Clara, Abraham and their beautiful family was absolutely amazing! I would highly recommend this workaway to anyone who wants to have an authentic experience of Guatemala and Mayan culture, it has been a highlight of my whole bagpacking trip!

To get to the farm it is a 3 hour bus ride from Coban (for 30Q / €3.50), and it is… read more absolutely worth the journey! Their farm is in a totally remote place away from human activity, surrounded by the jungle and sounds of nature - constantly hearing howler monkeys, birds and insects, with many animals around like snakes, colourful butterflies and frogs. They also have a huge cave full of bats on site!

I spent 5 days on the farm, but could have easily stayed longer. I slept in their cosy van, with other volunteers sleeping in the volunteer house. We all had breakfast with the family at 6am and worked for around 4 hours, before it got too hot. The work was fun and diverse, from helping to build a small house to harvesting tall grasses for the cows with a machete! When we finished work, we walked to their private river for an amazing swim - a highlight of every day! We then returned to the house for lunch with the family - Clara is an amazing chef, the food was always healthy, fresh, very tasty and with big portions. Once lunch was finished, we technically had free time - but I loved to spend the rest of the days playing with the kids, chatting to and helping Clara and having a siesta / reading in the hammock. For dinner I brought my own food, but everyday I shared food and cooking with the other volunteers and family. We all hung out together in the evenings, playing cards or having nice talks.

We did everything in Spanish, which was a great learning experience for me as I am trying to improve. Even in 5 days I saw much progress in my level, with the help and patience of Clara and Abraham explaining and translating the things I didn't understand. And every day their beautiful intelligent 7 year old daughter Lesley and I would teach each other Spanish and English, which was very helpful for me and a beautiful experience!

This family is a true inspiration in how they have build this little paradise of love in incredible nature. They live very simply and minimistically and are a good reminder that we don't need much stuff to be happy. They have some wifi in their house, but I chose to have my phone on airplane mode for the week as a digital detox and I recommend others to do the same!

Hearing them speak their local Mayan language and practice Mayan traditions with their extended family was a true representation of life in Guatemala. The family was so kind and welcoming, and made me feel at home as soon as I arrived. We really connected and I know that I will see them again in future.

Sarah is a wonderful person. She’s really motivated to work and always ready to help in everything you need. She’s open-minded and likes to learn languages and culture. She’s very nice with childrens and cooks very well. We loved the time she stayed with us.
