I had my first workaway experience in this village called Rohna, hosted by a German couple Manfred and Anna.
Upon arrival at Jena bus station, Anna welcomed me by offering me a cup of ice cream, and we ate ice cream while walking around the city of Jena.
The first evening and sometime after, their only son (Adrian), who was at my age, visited… read more his parents and I had the luck to join their proper barbecue dinners.
His partner and her friends shared delicious cakes from nearby, and that brightened the tea time.
The food for breakfast was probably the most interesting to me as the style (several types of bread, several types of cured meat, several types of cheese) was very different from ones I had been used to. Nevertheless I enjoyed the difference, especially the raw minced pork which is definitely not available in Japan (despite the fact we eat raw fish).
The work itself was very new to me, but it was no more than the amount an average person could do. I especially put my effort in cleaning out the horse dunk as I felt that was directly related to the quality of life of the horses.
During my stay, one of two horses (the older one named Pirat) couldn't stand up and was put to sleep. Previous day, I had noticed he hadn't eaten his food fully. He was an old horse (almost 30) and the decision was made by a vet.
I helped the couple carry the corpse to the designated location to be put until the carrier could come. I don't think I was much of help other than pulling and pushing, but I treated the corpse and the whole process with as much respect as I could.
I also had the chance to connect with one of the holiday guests, who happened to have traveled to East Asia because of his job. I had a good language-exchange moment with him.
During my stay from July 27th to August 14th, I was offered a beer for every dinner, heard about etymological explanations (Manfred's special interest), and occasionally saw shooting stars in the sky filled with stars.
I'd like to give my utmost gratitude to Adrian for including me in the sleepover dinners with his partner and her friends, to Manfred for keeping my company so I wouldn't feel lost, to Anna for her patience, and to Simon for letting me brush him as much as I wanted.
To workawayers who are experiencing a farm job for the first time: probably carry a bug spray with you as I ended up using it every time I cleaned the straw bed. A pair of boots also came in handy. You might need masks as well, not just for the smell but more for not inhaling tiny bits of straws and dry grass. I developed a cough spell which cured completely since I left the village, and I could've worn a mask from the beginning. A pair of gloves would be useful as well, but I ended up using none. All in all, I hope you enjoy.
