I love to learn languages! I first discovered my passion for language learning in high school when I was learning French. I then went on to continue learning French and started learning Japanese. I found it fascinating how the Japanese is structured and how it combines Kanji and Hiragana. I’m able to converse in French and I can understand a handful of Japanese. I know little Mandarin. The coolest part of cultural exchange for me is language.

If you want the perfect & authentic Japanese experience, seriously consider Mitake-san and Emi-san!

Their home is a fusion of traditional and modern which makes it comfortable yet enchanting. Everything is extremely clean which gave me peace of mind. The air is so fresh because its location is snug against the mountains. The walk to the station… read more is not bad at all just 5-6 minutes, but the train comes in intervals so be cautious to time it right [I've missed a few trains and have waited a little too long]. One of my favorite parts of my time there is biking around Ome! Their home is so comforting and beautiful. Emi's stained-glass light shades were a good personal touch to the home [my favorite lamp is the butterfly one when you first walk in and the tatami room you stay in]. The red appliances also were so subtly curated that I didn't notice until it was pointed out to me! Not to mention their garden, which was one of the most beautifully design environment spaces I've seen. I wish I could spend more time in the garden but my allergies were so bad :[

I felt like I was at home and they made great host parents. I never felt really lonely because they are interesting people to converse with! They are gentle and kind; they are diligent and respectful. I feel like I've learned a lot and have taken a lot of life lessons from this. Not only about Japanese culture, but also how I should lead my own life. They inspire me to lead a life full of cultural enrichment and be more creative, and hard-working. But also to enjoy the small moments in life, to enjoy the calm and quiet, and embrace the day.

This was my first time doing workaway, and this was my first time in Japan. I could not have asked for a better experience with the perfect host parents. I was extremely happy taking this leap of faith into something new and I don't regret it for a second. My expectation for hosts is now really high because I think Mitake-san and Emi-san have been the perfect hosts and have really refined this experience. Perfectly balanced work and free-time.

I used most of my free time in the city like Shibuya, Shinjuku and my last few days in Tachikawa and Harajuku. The ride there is an hour and a half away for about ~1000 yen. It only gets really crammed during rush hour in the city centre; otherwise, you can comfortably find a seat. However, their home town Ome is plenty enough to explore! There is a forest walk nearby, a mountain and shrine you can hike up to, and a lot of good restaurants around to try out! I also had the opportunity to go river rafting in the Tama river nearby [they had really really good Nepalese curry]. Where they are located gives you the option to enjoy both authentic and city life in Japan!

I am going to miss Mitake-san & Emi-san, I wish I got to spend more time with them and more time in Japan.
I hope to meet them again in this life time!
