Hi there! :)
After finishing my Bachelor's study last year, I decided it was time to take a gap year and see more of the world! I am a 22-year-old girl from the Netherlands who is very much looking forward to meeting new people and exploring new cultures and locations. I love outdoor activities (hiking for example), photography, and other creative things such as art, painting, and drawing.
Hopefully, there will be a great fit with me and a workaway somewhere around the world! :)

Although my Bachelor's was in the Netherlands, my study was in english and therefore open to students with all different nationalities. On top of that, I have studies in Rome, Italy for six months. This gave me the opportunity to work with people from many different cultures, which resulted in the ability to adapt easily to new surroundings and to work well in teams with people from all over the world!

During my Bachelor's, I did a board year at the biggest study association of the Netherlands. I have set up many events for students, focussing on everything from the logistics to the marketing of the event. This board year also helped me improve my presentation and organisation skills as well as my sense of responsibility.

In my free time, I put a lot of effort into videography and photography. I have followed courses and learned how to operate systems such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Photoshop. Next to that, I have improved my drawing and painting skills recently.

I volunteerd in this hostel from the end of February until the end of April and had the most amazing time! From the moment I walked into the hostel, I was welcomed by the reception staff with so much excitement and joy. I felt immediately at home and that feeling only grew stronger the more people I met from the team as well as meeting the other… read more volunteers.
The volunteering responsibilities are super fun and often do not even feel like work. As a volunteer, I organized many social activities such as games nights, movie nights, market visits, sunset watching, and Bring and Braai night. Furthermore, we got to volunteer on about two hikes per week. This was one of my favourite activities as you get to meet a lot of guests from both hostels while hiking up a mountain together and admiring the views. I find that I made most of my friends during these hikes! We also got to assist on the bigger hostel tours, such as the best of the Cape Tour and the Wine tour. These day trips have been super fun and resulted in great memories. I still cannot believe assisting on those tours is part of the volunteering responsibilities.
In the case an activity did not go through, there was a chance you needed to help out inside the hostel in another department. Usually there was no work for us to do, but the times I did have to help out have been pleasant experiences. You are never expected to 'take over' a big responsibility in a department, only to assist. I have for example helped at reception, which resulted in making sure everyone checked out on time while the receptions staff took on the main responsibilties.
The volunteering experience is incredibly well set up. You share a room with the (max) three other volunteers and the room is properly cleaned every week by the hostel. The volunteering schedule is well managed which makes it easy to plan your own things around the volunteering responsibilities. The hostel is also really helpful in accomodating schedule requests, albeit that you ofcourse still meet the five shifts per week. Bigger volunteering activities, such as the hikes, are always done with two volunteers per hostel which is great. Furthermore, Nique, the volunteer mangager, is such a warm and loving person who not only listens to your concerns but also takes action switly. I have always felt like I was heard and appreciated as a volunteer!
I can only look back on my time at the hostel with a lot of graditute and appreciation that I got this opportunity. Cape Town and especially its people have stolen a part of my heart and I am sure I will be back at some point to revisit all of these memories. Even now that I am back home, I am still in great contact with Nique, the other volunteers, and even the reception team from time to time. Ashton, Nique, Ruth and everyone else: a big thank you for this incredible experience!
