  • Description

I’m Kelsey! I am a 24 year old American. I have been traveling on and off for the last 3 years in Europe, Asia, and South America. I finished university in 2021 after studying International Relations and Spanish at UC Davis. After, I spent a year living in Hawaii and working as a barista before leaving and starting to backpack.

Through workaway I’ve met a lot of cool hosts and fellow travelers. My first workaway was working at a hotel in Albania and I came back the next summer again as a paid staff member where I managed the hotel as well as the volunteer staff. I’ve also learned about beer brewing and worked for a specialty coffee shop in France. Outside of workaway I have a lot of experience in childcare as I nannied for 6 years. During my time in university I worked for the Orientation program as a student manager and helped create and oversee the program alongside the professional staff. Since then I have mostly worked in service, but I love to learn new things and gain new skills.

It’s important to me to always keep busy. I love to read and almost always have a book on me. I play ukulele and guitar (poorly), but like to mess around and sing. I try to always find something creative to work on whether it is drawing, painting, crafting, writing. My favorite part of traveling is picking up bits of new languages. I studied Spanish in school and university and am always trying to improve my speaking. During the start of the pandemic, I started to study French a bit and now can stumble through some sentences which came in handy at some of my past workaways. I have dual Italian citizenship and spent some time living there as well and began studying on my own before moving there. I was able to get to an intermediate-ish level. While at a volunteer job in Albania I learned a decent amount of the language in a short time and this past spring while in Taiwan I was taking Mandarin lessons online. I also really love to walk and wander around and will often choose to walk for hours over taking public transportation.

I am an adaptable person and am ready to learn new skills :) I am in Uruguay visiting family and figuring out where I want to go next.

  • More details about your skills

I studied International Relations and Spanish in university. I have a passion for learning about new places, cultures, and languages. I speak English, Spanish, and am currently learning Italian. I also know the tiniest bit of French.

When I was in university I worked for the Orientation program for the school and that taught me how to meet new people, organize and plan, and work in customer service. I also have experience working as a research assistant in the Political Science department. This last year I worked in a popular cafe in Hawaii and learned all the positions, but spent most of time working as a barista and trainer. I am really interested in learning more about coffee, especially how it is enjoyed in different places around the world.

Last year, I did a workaway at a hotel in Albania and learned about all the elements it takes to run one. Responsibilities included housekeeping, preparing meals, checking in and assisting guests, gardening, etc. Every day brings new small challenges to overcome, so you learn to be adaptable and a problem solver.

My greatest skill is that I am a hard worker, so whatever is required of me I always try my best.
