  • Description

G'day! This is Mia and Ruby from Australia. We have been best friends for over 10 years and have taken a sabbatical from our lives in Sydney and Tasmania to explore Europe. We met in school, and then worked in hospitality together for many years while we studied at University. Today, we live in different cities, and are really looking forward to a big adventure abroad together.

Combined, we have extensive experience in child care, elderly care, cleaning, cooking, gardening and farming. We also have skills in artistic painting, construction labour, use of power tools, marketing, social media management and so much more! We are full of energy and smile, and are keen to try anything!

We would like to practice our Italian, and test with our hosts how they think our pasta and tiramisu skills are coming along (we are pretty good!!!). As we travel Italy for spring, we are really hoping to become a part of a traditional Italian home, to practice our Italian and our cooking, but we would also like to learn a new skill.

In July, Ruby will return to Australia, and then Mia will continue to travel around Spain, England, Ireland, Scotland and beyond!

  • More details about your skills

We are both big home bodies, and enjoying being a part of a big, lively home. We both come from big families, and are real nurturers and hard workers by nature. Therefore, we are very hands-on and love to jump in to help with things. When we are together, we usually start the day getting up early for a walk and a swim, before getting back to the house to cook a big breakfast for the family. Nothing makes us happier than cooking for others. There is always a fight over who does the dishes.

We are both quick learners and work with care, putting our hearts into everything we do - it is something we both admire a lot in each other.

In our day jobs, Ruby is a social worker, currently working at a hospital in Sydney in a dynamic role that provides a lot of physical and mental support to patients. This equips Ruby with many transferable skills in looking after people and providing a wide range of care to young and old. Ruby is half Italian, and has travelled Europe extensively. She has many years experiences babysitting, and has professional cleaning and nannying experience. She loves spending time with children and learning with them, whether that is cooking, sharing language or trying a new game, she enjoys creating a fun and supportive environment for them. She is an excellent cook, artist and musician.

Mia works for the University of Tasmania in strategy and business development, advising the University on it's future direction towards a more sustainable, equitable and diverse education system. Mia also volunteers for Landcare, which is weeding, cleaning and restoring natural spaces in her local environment, she also has experience in establishing zero-waste music and food festivals in her local community. Mia has just completed 3 months backpacking in Japan with 5 different homestays (facilitated via the WWOOFing organisation) which involved helping to run a cafe, labouring on home renovations, using power tools, making firewood, sanding and oiling, gardening, clearing forest, cooking, making preserves and jams, and organic farming.
