  • Description

Hello! I am Tuleh, and I am a 20 year old American student currently studying psychology at a university in the U.K. I am taking a semester off from my studies to travel to and learn about Latvia its culture: I am pursuing Latvian citizenship through my grandfather, who left in the 1940s. I still have extended family in Latvia who I hope to meet while in the country!

I spent the first years of my life living in New York City, but developed a love for the outdoors visiting my grandparents in the country almost every weekend. My family has since moved to the suburbs of NYC and take advantage of all of the outdoor activities afforded often. I am very close with my family and have three younger siblings. I spent most of my summers as an adolescent attending a sleepaway camp in rural Maine, where I would live for seven weeks without electricity or technology and learned the skills necessary to live outdoors. In school, I participated in an environmental immersion program that included a rigorous environmentally-focused courseload that deepened my longstanding passion for sustainability. I am also a massive animal lover: I was constantly begging my parents growing up to allow me to have as many pets as possible, and as a four-year-old meat-lover, upon discovering that meat was made from animals I stubbornly vowed to never eat meat again. 16 years later, I am still a vegetarian (although I will try bites of meat for the cultural experience or out of necessity, I have developed psychological discomfort with my eating meat but would not want that to interfere with my ability to attend a workaway experience where a lot of meat is served).

I am a naturally curious person and love traveling, reading, culture, and music. My favourite part about traveling is probably having the opportunity to meet new people and hear about their differing experiences and perspectives. I am a very outgoing person and I love having philosophical and intellectual (or not) conversations about everything and anything! I am often playful and humorous but also have a calm demeanor that is serious when appropriate. I am very perceptive of others and have a strong ability to match the energy of whoever I am around. Despite my fondness of being around people, I also enjoy quiet time to myself.

  • More details about your skills

I grew up doing lots of gardening, hiking, caring for animals, and helping my family out with various projects/chores around my home. I have experience volunteering in a homeless shelter, animal shelter, food bank, elderly home, and daycare. For several summers I worked at a rustic sleep-away summer camp for children leading overnight and day hiking and canoe trips, as well as teaching skills such as canoeing, sailing, swimming, and outdoor living skills (axemanship, fire building, general knowledge, etc.) I am a certified lifeguard with the American Red Cross (training in CPR, first aid, and saving drowning victims). I am both able-bodied and a quick study and am eager and able to learn new skills!
