Hey there! I’m Dongyi, from Taiwan.

I graduated from high school two years ago and have been on a gap year adventure ever since. My first year, I went to Australia to learn English and also did some workaway there. It was such an incredible time. This past year, I’ve been living in Finland, working as a teacher assistant at a folk high school. I help out with English, Finnish, and Swedish classes and join in on all kinds of activities with the students. It’s been super fun and a great way to learn about Finnish culture. I mainly help with English lessons and my Finnish and Swedish skills...hahah. My Finnish is way better than Swedish; I can only say something weird in Swedish.

I’m into languages, photography, art, and psychology. I really enjoy meeting new people, learning different ways of living, and helping out wherever I can—whether that’s teaching, sharing stories, cooking, gardening, or just giving a hand around the house.

I’m planning to stay in Europe for a bit longer before heading back to Taiwan in the middle of August 2025. I’d love to keep discovering new places and connecting with people through Workaway.

Thanks for checking out my profile. Hope we can meet and share good times!

Currently, I possess proficiency in three languages: Chinese, Taiwanese, and English language, which I am actively learning. I have a strong interest in learning English, and it is one of the reasons why I came to Australia. In Taiwan, the emphasis in schools is primarily on reading and writing, with comparatively less focus on developing oral communication skills. Therefore, after graduating from high school, I decided to come to Australia, hoping to enhance my speaking through exposure to a real language environment.

  • Que habilidades tienes?

    1. Childcare Skills
During my time in Australia, I participated in a Workaway program where I assisted a family with a four-year-old girl and a one-year-old baby. I helped the family for three months, during which I fully learned how to interact with both young children and infants. This experience allowed me to acquire practical childcare skills, including basic care, interactive play, and educational guidance. I effectively managed the daily needs of the children, and this experience has given me the confidence and competence to excel in any childcare-related role.

    2. Gardening Skills
During my time in Australia with the Workaway program, I actively participated in a variety of gardening tasks such as weeding, harvesting flowers, building pathways, and transplanting plants. Over the three months, I not only mastered basic gardening techniques but also learned how to plan and organize gardening projects. I became proficient in identifying and handling different types of plants, understanding their growth needs, and managing the time and resources efficiently to ensure the smooth execution of gardening tasks.
This experience deepened my passion for gardening and enhanced my practical skills and problem-solving abilities. Whether it's routine maintenance or more complex gardening projects, I am confident in my ability to handle and deliver excellent results.

    3. Photography:
I am a travel and event photographer. I started photography in high school. Since then, I have continued to specialize in travel and street photography. However, recently, I had the opportunity to take on projects involving birthday parties and Halloween party photography. This has broadened my photography skills, allowing me to comprehensively document various events.

    4. Baking:
My mom and dad have a strong passion for baking, so they have integrated their love into their work, dedicating themselves to the bread-related industry. From my childhood to now, my parents often experiment with various new baking recipes at home, and I always enthusiastically join in, allowing me to learn a wealth of valuable baking knowledge.
During this process, I've tried making various baked goods such as toast, French bread, soft cookies, macarons, and more. Through hands-on experiences with my parents, I've not only learned how to create delicious treats but also cultivated a deep love and skill for baking.

    5. Cultivating different vegetables and fruits:
During my time in Taiwan, my grandmother owned a piece of land used for cultivating various plants, including fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Because of her ownership of this land, whenever she had free time, she would take me there and personally teach me how to cultivate different vegetables and fruits.

    6. Languages:
I am currently fluent in Mandarin, Taiwanese, and English. For the past year I've been learning Finnish and it's such a cool language. Additionally, I used to study German. I have always been passionate about learning languages since I believe that mastering a language is the best way to fully understand and appreciate the culture of a place.
To enhance my language skills, I spent a year in Australia. This experience not only improved my English fluency but also exposed me to diverse cultural interactions and integration. This year abroad deepened my love and interest in language learning and provided me with valuable practical experience in using languages.

    7. Psychology:
I have always held a strong interest in psychology because through studying psychology, I can gain a deeper understanding of the complex relationships between emotions and interpersonal interactions. During high school, I had the opportunity to serve as the class counselor and continued in that role for three years. Throughout this period, I experienced many fulfilling moments. Whenever I saw someone improve and feel better after counseling, it brought me great joy. This sense of achievement deepened my understanding of the value of psychology. So far I'm trying to study in Finland in 2026.

    8. Passionate about exploration:
In Taiwan, most students immediately enter university upon graduating from high school, even if they haven't decided on a major that they are truly interested in. In contrast, I chose to take a two-year Gap Year, which is relatively uncommon in Taiwan. The primary reason for this decision is to learn English and, at the same time, confirm the academic field I want to specialize in. As mentioned earlier, I have a strong interest in psychology and aspire to become an English teacher. Therefore, during this Gap Year, I plan to thoroughly contemplate and clarify my career direction.
I anticipate spending one year in Australia and then heading to Finland in August 2024 for an international volunteer opportunity. I will be helping English classed and some Swedish and Finnish at a folk high school. This unique experience will contribute to a deeper understanding of my interests and future career direction.

    9. Passionate about learning:
I am extremely passionate about learning new things. Whenever I develop an interest in a particular field, I proactively go to the library or search for relevant videos and online courses. Taking photography as an example, my photography skills are entirely acquired through reading books and watching related videos on YouTube. Additionally, as I mentioned before, Taiwanese schools do not emphasize the cultivation of English-speaking skills. Therefore, before coming to Australia, I primarily self-taught English by watching videos on YouTube and series on Netflix, and I achieved quite satisfactory results.
