We are a couple in our early thirties with a passion for plants, nature, and good food. Lauren is an herbalist that was working at a non profit community health center before traveling. She loves baking, writing, and art. Ben is a horticulturist that was working at a fruit tree nursery. He has experience with carpentry, gardening, and loves hiking in the mountains.

We’re hoping to expand and grow through our travels.

Lauren has been working as an herbalist for the last five years and has studied for an additional ten. She’s given classes and workshops and is generally good at working with people. She’s a talented baker ranging from sourdough bread to tarts and pastries. She’s great at processing plants and farm products into finished products.

Ben is an excellent gardener with experience as a carpenter and in minor construction projects. He has been working as a horticulturalist for the last five years. He is a talented cook and great at caring for plants.

Overall we enjoyed the 5 weeks that we spent in Gunma, working at the Lodge. The location is stunningly beautiful, and afforded us many opportunities to hike, go for bike rides, and see ホタル (fireflies). The owners provided access to a car, which was a huge benefit. Rika kindly shared many of her favorite local ingredients, and occasional home… read more cooked dishes, which we enjoyed greatly. Craig has a wealth of knowledge about tourist activities around Minakami, and was always eager to make recommendations. The lodge is beautiful, and almost all guests were polite and a pleasure to engage with. There is a fair amount of flexibility with how certain tasks are completed, affording some creative potential, but also requiring additional effort beyond simply following established protocols.

The job did contain its share of challenges, some expected and others unforeseen until we arrived. The schedule was 7 days a week, with limited exceptions for when there are no hotel guests. In five weeks, we only experienced two genuine days off. Since there was no permanent staff (at least at this time), the two of us were responsible for preparing and serving a full breakfast and espresso drinks every morning (starting around 7am), all room prep and hotel cleaning, folding and ironing all towels and linens, near-daily baking, and checking in guests from 3pm to 9pm nightly. While the schedule often allowed for time off during the middle of the day, we sometimes felt “on call” for up to 14 hours each day, only a fraction of which were directly compensated. Finally, we found training (which was conducted by outgoing workaways, not the owners) left us with gaps in some skills and occasionally unprepared for changing expectations. These challenges left us feeling burnt out, and we shortened our stay by about 2 weeks from our original expectation.

I would recommend potential workers consider whether they are prepared for the consuming nature of the work, and that the owners consider some small changes (such as one guaranteed day off per week, or changes to the check-in procedures) that could make this position feel more sustainable for stays longer than 3 weeks or so.

With that said, this position has a lot going for it. We slept soundly in the comfortable staff bedroom, climbed to the top of Mt. Tanigawa, soaked in the local onsen, and loved relaxing by the river during the middle of the day. For the right people, this could be an excellent opportunity.
