Wow, count yourself lucky if you have the opportunity to be hosted by Line Marie! She is an incredibly warm, generous, open, thoughtful person and host who will go out of her way to ensure you enjoy Galiano and have fun during your Workaway with her.
I stayed with Line Marie for 3 weeks in June/July 2023, during which time I helped out with odd
… read more jobs (cleaning, sorting, organising and moving things) around her house and property. We had a lot of fun sharing stories, cooking together (Line Marie is a great cook), and going for picnic dinners at different beaches around the island.
Line Marie was flexible with the hours I worked and went out of her way to connect me with a range of local people and activities (I joined some community soccer games, we went to the community hall for their delicious soup lunch, and she got me involved in the yearly pirate regata, full costume and all!). She is a very active host and makes a big effort to ensure her Workawayers experience all that Galiano has to offer.
Line Marie taught me about mosaics and let me contribute to one she was working on while I was there (very generous of her, especially as it was my first time!). She was also kind enough to loan me a bicycle and her car to get around (you can also walk and hitch hike easily enough).
Line Marie's property is absolutely gorgeous (you'll be blown away), with a few (great) options for where you will stay depending on what else is happening when you're there. I was fortunate enough to see eagles and deer (daily) as well as orca whales during my stay.
Line Marie has a really positive attitude towards life and a solution for every obstacle. It's impossible not to get swept up in her energy and joie de vivre - Line Marie is all about having fun :)

I loved staying with Line-Marie. She is a character: joyful, very generous and full of stories to tell thanks to the many lives she has lived. Her place is magical and full of beautiful pieces of art (you can even get to see orcas while having your coffee in the morning!). … read more let me down, even though she was looking for experienced people (garden lovers and handymen, you are very welcome there!). We mostly did weeding, gardening and cleaning around, sometimes with a nice francophone tune in the background: Line-Marie is a French Ontarian, I was very interested in learning about that community of French speaking people and get to speak french with her. Commnication is easy, she tells you directly what she wants and you can tell her anything, she won't take it the wrong way. She has something that makes everyone like her instantly and you'll get to see that when walking around Galiano with her.
Thank you so much for having me Line-Marie! I will miss our mornings in the garden, the evenings in your "backyard" (ahaha) and your lively and inspiring spirit. Merci pour tout, c'était merveilleux <3

I had a wonderful time on this beautiful island. We watched the birds and absorbed the sun sets with fun, dance and laughter. We ate great food and generally enjoyed living is this magical spot.

I had the opportunity to stay with Line for 6+ months. It was such an incredible experience that I wanted to document it. This review therefore is as much for you as it is for me (ha ha).
When I caught the ferry to come to Galiano, I phoned Line and she told me soup will be ready when I got there. This would be my first introduction to Line’s
… read more soup and her cooking. Line is an extraordinary chef and everything she touches tastes incredible. I’ve had so many delicious soups I can’t count them all, but my favourite was her broccoli soup. Incroyable! I was not vegan when I arrived, but I was vegan when I left because Line showed how delicious she could make a vegan meal. One of the highlights of my stay was learning how to cook (better). I’m still not great, but so much better than I was. There were many parties and lots of laughs in Line’s kitchen cooking pizza, sushi, etc… with music always playing in the background.
In addition to healthy foods, Line likes healthy diets. She challenged me to one diet where I lost an enormous amount of weight. When I got home my boys almost didn’t recognize me, and none of my clothes fit.
Line’s property is large with a seemingly endless amount of work to be done. No matter what work needed doing, there was always time for fun. Line would organize hikes and walks to Coon Bay, the Bluffs, Bellhouse Park, Montague Park, a walk down Georgeson Bay Rd, and all the beaches in the area. One of the most hilarious experience I had was after a walk with Line it got really dark, fast. With no street lights around, Line intend we try a navigate our way back up her long winding driveway in total darkness (lol). After a few wrong turns leading down the wrong driveway, Line finally agreed to use a flashlight. Too funny!
Line has a great sense of humour so there will be lots of laughing whether you are working or not. She might ask you to climb up a tree to take a silly picture of you, or drive around the island in a stinky truck doing all kinds of silly things. Even a shopping trip to Wal-Mart can be fun! When a snowstorm hit and we had to drive up the windy driveway in the snow, she wasn’t worried about the car going in the ditch, “We’ll get it out” she said.
There is always work to be done inside and out. My work was always met with patience and appreciation, like the time I raked pine cones in tiny little piles around the property. Line was quick to recognize the brilliance of my work.
If you spend enough time on Galiano it will change you. The incredible beauty, the wildlife, the fresh air, the quiet, the pace, and the people. My time at Line’s changed me. I will never be the same lol. Line is a very strong and kind person who welcomed me into her home. I got to know her friends, family, and community. It was an experience far greater than I could have expected.

We stayed with Line for a month and a half and had an amazing time. Line was an amazing host. We helped tidy up her gardens and other general property maintenance, as well as helped her move locations of her studio. The work was very laid back and she took us out to all the best local places and introduced us to great people as well. She was great
