  • Description

Hello, my name is Rob and I am passionate about nature conservation, music, surfing, gardening photography, hiking, history, travel, fishing.. the list goes on. Primarily, I thrive off of physical outdoors work, and have a very strong work ethic. I love to meet new people and will immerse myself in the cultures of the places I visit. I have travelled a lot in the past, but over the last year have fallen into the trap of office life. I am desperate to shake out of this routine and learn as much as possible from people that have managed to make a life for themselves off the beaten track.. with the hope to one day do the same myself.

I have completed a degree in Physical Earth Science at Swansea University which allowed me to work in an outdoor environment whilst improving my research skills and capacity for independent judgment. I have also carried out the Royal Horticultural Society Level 1 Course which which enabled me to learn about topics such as plant identification/health and explore my ecological interests further. After graduating with a 2:1 from university, I worked as a Lifeguard and Surf Coach at The Wave in Bristol for a number of years. I took great pleasure in welcoming newcomers to the sport and making surfing an accessible activity for all. I am a member of a band that has been performing and releasing music for over five years. I am responsible for organising our shows, producing social media content, and managing any other logistical elements. I have played shows regularly in Bristol, London and many music festivals, and take an enormous amount of joy in sharing my love of music with others. Currently, I work in Student Support at The University of Bristol where I help students navigate any issues they might be experiencing with their studies. We have all had to overcome adversity in our lives, and I take pride in helping others where I can.

However, I miss physical work in the great outdoors and have a keen desire to explore, learn new skills and meet like-minded people. I love the feel of my bones aching at the end of a hard day's work and having earned that evening drink with friends.

I am very interested in learning Italian. I am lucky enough to have a friend who grew up in Italy, and was able to stay with them and their family for a couple of weeks last year. I fell in love with the country and it's people, and would love to learn more about their culture.

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

I recently worked part-time on a Christmas Tree Farm, which demanded a high level of fitness due to there being lots of heavy lifting involved, in cold and wet conditions. I enjoy this type of work and find it especially rewarding to be able to keep fit whilst at work.

I have carried out volunteering with the following charities:
    - One Tree Per Child; a charity that aims to enable every child in Bristol to plant at least one tree before leaving school. I thoroughly enjoyed working as part of a community group planting different species of trees.
    - The Wave Project; helping young disadvantaged children improve their mental health through the use of surfing. I worked closely with adaptive surfers with additional needs, helping them achieve their surfing goals.

I graduated from Swansea University in 2018 where I gained a BSc Physical Earth Science degree with a 2:1 (Hons). My degree allowed me to work in an outdoor environment and by managing my time efficiently I continued with my interest in nature and the outdoors whilst meeting the course deadlines. In my dissertation, I had a particular focus on soil chemistry and how it affects vegetation types. I completed a comparative study of two varying rock types which involved soil sampling followed by laboratory analysis where I became accustomed to working with different chemicals and dilution methods. This further enhanced my analytical and research skills, whilst remaining active in an outdoor environment. I have undertaken the Royal Horticultural Society Level 1 course which enabled me to learn about topics such as plant identification/health and explore my ecological interests further. I have a strong understanding of numerous different computer systems and databases, including the MS Office suite, SharePoint, Workplace, Teams, amongst others.

I love to cook and would be happy to do so throughout my stay. I share a house in Bristol with three friends and I love to put together a meal for the gang. Sharing good food, a nice drink and stories with friends is one of my favourite things in life. I also bake a lot of bread!
