Hello! I am Heleen, I come from the Netherlands and I just finished my studies which gives me the opportunity to travel around. Not too long ago I came back from four months of travel in South East Asia, and I definitely got the travel bug! I am grateful that I could meet all kinds of people, both local and other travelers, sharing stories and the customs of our countries with each other. This experience has brought me a lot of joy and good memories. Now, I would like to continue my travels to the United States. My mom is from Kansas, and I want to visit my family there for Thanksgiving and then further get to know my moms homecountry better! I am very interested in visiting both the East and West coast, as I have mostly been in the Midwest during my previous visits to the US. I would love to do volunteering with other Workawayers. I think it would be very fulfilling to work towards a collective goal with others, and at the same time forging close friendships.
So, about myself: I am quite the active person, I love doing yoga, dancing, and I am always up for an adventurous hike. I don't have certificate or anything, but I love giving yoga 'lessons' to my friends for fun. I like reading (recently more into the scarier stuff from Stephen King), and I like doing creative activities such as pottery painting. I am also a big animal lover, being around cats or dogs brings me a lot of joy.
My friends would describe me as a someone who is likeable and easy to get along with. I am very openminded and curious towards other people and their stories, which I think makes for a good Workawayer :-)

I will be moving for my job to Germany in January, so I would like to practise/learn German. I myself am fluent in Dutch and English, so I would be happy to practise these languages with hosts or other Workawayers!

Quelles sont vos compétences ?

I have been doing yoga for 11 years now, and I love doing yoga together with friends and teaching them about the things that I know. I am also fluent in Dutch and English, so if anyone can benefit from some Dutch or English practice, I am happy to help! One winter, I volunteered with my aunt to build beds for kids that previously did not have one in their home, so I know how to use powertools. I have worked in many restaurants and bars, hospitality is a big part of who I am. I enjoy hosting parties/events for my friends and ensuring that they have a good time. I can also pour a good beer, haha.

I love playing games! My favorite is a cardgame called 'Swedish bullying' in Dutch (don't ask me why), it is also known as Sh**head in English :p. Games that you can play with a big group, like Uno, also rank high with me. I can take a loss well, so no need to hold back during a board game session. I like Ludo and I used to play Pente (5 in a row) with my mom a lot. She was always better than me, maybe that's where my resilliance came from... I also like strategic games that take longer, such as Catan.
My other interests include talking about science (very broad, I know). I studied genetics, so I like anything DNA and biology, but I also like talking about other puzzling topics such as space!
I also like cooking and learning dishes from various countries. I have taken a cooking class in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, and I loved it! I would like to learn more, as I am a huge foodie and always looking for new recipes.
