We arrived in Canada on an IEC visa at the beginning of September. Coming to a new country we are open to embracing new opportunities and learning more about this beautiful country.

Description

Hello! We are Laura and Luke, a couple from the UK. We both grew up in Devon (South West of England) surrounded by a lot of countryside and farms, so we naturally developed a love for animals and being outdoors. More recently we've been living in London, enjoying all of the cultural and culinary delights it has to offer. We're currently settled in beautiful Fernie for winter but heading west for late spring/summer.

We're a really easygoing couple, but we're also enthusiastic and driven when it comes to working hard - whether it’s helping with a project, learning new skills, or supporting daily chores and tasks, we're happy getting stuck in and helping out wherever needed. Laura is a midwife for the NHS and Luke has run a successful events business across London and New York alongside working as a carpenter. Our versatile skill sets and positive attitude makes us a great addition to any team or project.

As mentioned, we enjoy the outdoors - running, hiking, climbing, swimming, skiing or trying out any new pursuits! We're always up for an adventure and eager to explore wherever we are.

Travelling and exploring new places is a big passion of ours (in fact we met each other travelling in New Zealand in 2010). We love meeting new people, sharing stories and immersing ourselves in different cultures - this is what brings us joy. It sounds cliche but it's all about getting off the beaten track and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone! Most of all we love sharing a good meal with friends, for us there's nothing better.

We're excited to be joining the Workaway community, where we can combine our passions for learning, cultural exchange and exploring new places. We've had some fantastic experiences of volunteering and housesitting during our time in Canada and we can't wait to experience more. We look forward to meeting you, sharing experiences, and hopefully contributing to your projects.

We're both keen to become more proficient in both French and Spanish. We spent 2022 travelling the length of Central and South America which gave us a great foundation in Spanish which we'd love to build upon. We find all languages interesting so we would be open learning any we encounter. English is our native language and we're very happy to help teach this to anyone.

Quelles sont vos compétences ?

We're a very practical, hands-on couple, who love to learn new skills - we're always up for trying anything new! Laura is a midwife with over 12 years experience, many of which have been teaching and mentoring other midwives, so is a very capable and calming presence. Luke has a broad experience from ski instructing, carpentry, organising live events and working for various tech companies. We've renovated our own apartment and redesigned the garden so we're pretty handy and have some general building experience. We both really enjoy cooking and hosting guests for dinner.

Luke is a keen long distance runner and regularly participates in marathons. Laura enjoys swimming, hiking and getting stuck into a good book. We both love getting into cold water! We spent 10 weeks living in our camper van driving it from London to Norway and back - which provided plenty of opportunities for (very) cold water dips in various lakes, fjords and rivers around Scandinavia. We're big foodies - both cooking and eating - and love learning about the local cuisine wherever we are, it's one of the best ways to get an understanding of someones culture. Luke has been nurturing a sourdough starter since 2017. While Laura hasn't made as many loaves as Luke, she has got extremely good at eating them!

  Special dietary requirements Laura is dairy free so can't eat things like milk, butter, cheese, cream etc. Everything else if fine!
