Description
My name is Walker Meyer and I am 23 years old and love traveling abroad and roadtripping around North America. I have recently graduated Undergrad from the University of Oregon and am in the process of applying to PhD programs in Biology across the US. In the mean time, I am working seasonal positions and exploring the outdoors. My passion in life is to spend as much time in the outdoors as I can, wether it be camping, hiking, mountaineering, bird watching, fly fishing, or anything else.

I have also spent several years as a professional carpenter, cabinet maker, welder, and furniture maker and love to help out with house projects of any size. I take great enjoyment out of my crafts and get very excited about making/designing just about anything. Within the US, I travel with many of my own carpentry and welding tools which I am happy to lend while staying with Workaway folks. Thanks for reading!

I strongly value trade skills and love putting my experience to work! I am passionate about making things both in design and craft. I'd love to help out with any repair, renovation, and building projects you may have in mind.

As a professional woodworker, I have significant experience in the following:
- Cabinetry (currently work as a professional cabinet maker)
- Carpentry (trim carpentry, stick framing, timber framing)
- Fine Woodworking (large custom piece hardwood furniture)
- Exterior Wood Finishing
- Dock building (I have built boat docks for host families a surprising number of times!)

Past jobs as an outdoor metalworker and landscaper have provided me with experience in the following:
- MIG, Fluxcore, and Stick welding (I often travel with my own portable welder and grinder set up)
- Metal Fabrication (Grinding, cutting, etc.)
- Gardening
- Irrigation

Additional (and maybe less useful) skills:
- Pacific Northwest Flora and Fauna identification (Ask me about botany or bird watching!)
- Rock climbing, ropes, alpine climbing
- Fly fishing, fly tying
- snowshoeing, and snowshoe making

Walker was our longest staying guest yet, with a whopping 10 weeks here! He also had a full-time job elsewhere, so this was a modified WA, but boy was he helpful and wonderful to have around. We would keep him longer if we could (and we did offer, but he’s off to new adventures!), and we highly recommend you host Walker if you get the… read more chance.

Walker had a car, brought his own tools, and did a lot of important projects around here despite having a normal job as well. The list is long, but some of what he did included: refinished a bathroom, built a beautiful window frame and sill in our kitchen, put together a chicken coop kit, dug holes and planted trees, did lawn care, housesat, loved on and cared for our dog, and rebuilt/welded a wrought-iron fence. This is not even close to a complete list, but everything Walker did was done well and with care and skill. He also helped clean the bathroom and kitchen and cooked some excellent dinners (have him make southern food for you—namely his shrimp and grits!!).

In every way Walker contributed to this family/household during his stay. While his handyman skills were so appreciated, it’s his personality that makes Walker special. He is extremely kind, thoughtful, and respectful. He went out of his way to make a difference in our lives, and exhibited sincere empathy during his stay when one of my friends passed away. We had seven other Workawayers come and go during Walker’s stay, and he not only welcomed them all warmly, but made a point to plan and take them all out on some fun adventures and helped them feel comfortable here. He fit right into our gatherings with family and friends, too.

Walker is a great competitor and fun to play games with. I won’t let him forget I beat him at Catan (just a lucky night, I’m sure, because he is strategic and clever)-- we shared a lot of laughs in the evenings over various games. We also shared stories and -wow- does this young man have a solid foundation and varied interests and skills. Now on his way to graduate school to study genetics, he will undoubtedly make a difference in our world one day because he is focused and motivated to discover new things about how “we” (all on this earth) work.

I feel like I could go on about Walker, but you get the gist—he’s a gem and we are so thankful he ended up staying with us this spring. We consider him family now and look forward to seeing him again and to keeping up with all the great things he accomplishes in the future. If you want a responsible, brilliant, kind, participatory independent thinker around, invite Walker into your home! You won’t regret it.
