Hello Workawayers,
I am the founder of a small Community Based Organization whose mission since inception in 2016 has solely been to mitigate poverty and restore hope through providing access to quality education to the underprivileged children in the villages of Kyamagwa and Ivunamba in Jinja district, Uganda with a concrete belief that education is the only leveler and equalizer within society.
Nestled on the shores of the largest freshwater lake in Africa, Lake Victoria, Jinja boasts being a home to the source of the Nile River, which is the longest river in the world. Known for its rich culture, impressive landscape and offering "once in a lifetime" experiences spanning from white water rafting on the Nile to bungee jumping, to mention but a few. Our communities can simply be characterized by loving, kind and happy locals that are eager to meet, learn and share experiences with new people which fact guarantees the utmost safety of the volunteers.
Between 2016 and 2023, the construction of a community pre-primary and primary school in the village of Kyamagwa was the first initiative the organization undertook given that the school would then go on to become the only school offering pre-primary education knowing well its importance during the first 8 years (formative years) of the child when the brain is developing. Further still, the school has enabled more children to progress to secondary level education that has greatly dropped the numbers of child marriages and early pregnancies among the girls of the community not forgetting to put into account how its freed largely the boys from the bondage of child labor. As of March 2024, the community school was closing in to 400 pupils.
Earlier in 2024, after the community school closed in to its maximum capacity of 400 pupils, the organization decided to extend its need to make a difference in the village of Ivunamba that barely has a school. Over ninety percent (90%) of the children can neither read and write nor attend school. The remaining percentage that can read "three letter", "four letter" words cannot comprehend, it is on such a background that I draw the itch and urgency to try and make a difference.
The current and available facilities including classrooms, latrines, kitchen, water resources among others are dilapidated but the organization inherently believes that with the support of friends, volunteers and well-wishers of the project, lives of children will be changed forever.

Even if I had no teaching experience, it was fun and I enjoyed the moments with the pupils.
