Dear Chalotte and Steen: you were my 10th and final workaway of the year, and what an amazing way to end that epic journey 😊 I only stayed 2 weeks (time flies so fast!) but I had so much fun with the animals, especially Hjordis and Fylgge, and I've learned a lot about permaculture. Thank you again for welcoming me in your lovely home, you truly have a piece of heaven on earth with this beautiful farm 🩵 I really enjoyed my time with you, meeting your family, playing games and making s'mores and sausages at the boat house. I'd have loved to spend more time sharing stories. I'll definitely be back sometime to see all of you and help around (and Chalotte, we'll take our revenge on Cascadia!😉).

There is ducks, geese, chickens, sheep, peacocks, pigeons, cats, a big vegetable garden and of course the two loveliest dogs you’ll ever meet. (I miss throwing tiny sticks for them ;-))
It is very clearly communicated what has to be done and it was never too much, or really hard work.
You’ll feel welcome and like a part of the family immediately. We took turns in cooking and used veggies from the garden a lot, and sometimes we were baking cakes. I had my own room and shared he bathroom with 2 other workawayers.
There is huge lake basically right in front of the door, where you can go for a swim in your free time or just enjoy nature.
I loved everything about my stay, like I already said and I was sad to leave. If I can, I will be back and even if it’s just for staying a night in your B&B.

… read more I've ever met, the worst part is leaving because you are going to miss the whole lot of them.
We would start the day at, 8 am with a shared breakfast and then work approximately 5 hours (5 days the week). While I was staying with them my tasks included feeding the animals, preparing veggie beds for planting, seeding and a whole lot more, that had to get done around the farm. While I was staying with them they had chickens, ducks, geese, pigeons, two peacocks, ramps and a herd of sheep (+a bunch of adorable lambs that were born during my stay).
The food was amazing and they were super accommodating to me as a vegetarian. They would drive me and another volunteer to the Sorø station so that we could go on weekend trips and explore the rest of Denmark. The accommodation was really good, I had a room to myself and truly felt at home in their house.

Chalotte and Steen were excellent hosts to me.
I volunteered for a month and a half on his beautiful farm. We worked the land applying the concepts of permaculture, we cared for and fed the animals.
The accommodation was comfortable and warm.
Regarding food, we ate typical Danish dishes and they never skimped on anything.

Chalotte and Steen are adorable, it was really good to spend time with them and their animals. They were willing to help us with all we needed, always thoughtful and patient. We stayed at Chalotte and Steen's farm for three weeks and it was an amazing experience! They made us part of their family and since the first day we were included in the daily rutine. We worked in differents things everyday, like seeding and planting, taking care of their beautiful animals, painting walls, ensambling furniture, cleaning, etc.
… read more That was really nice because we learned so many things about the life in the country side, farming and permaculture, and they were always patient and enthusiastic about teaching us their knowledge. This is the kind of place where you notice how much love and time they put to make it beautiful and different, so it feels really good being part of that process.
In our free time, we shared a great time together watching movies every night (we have soooo much fun), cooking, playing piano or enjoying the company of their lovely dogs: Hjørdis and Lyra. And of course we talked a lot about our lifes and experiences, so was a really nice way to learn about danish culture.

Where to begin...
This was our first Workaway experience, from mid January to February. The hosts and all their animals made us feel like part of the family from the moment they picked us up from the train station and we stepped on the farm. Within a couple days of being on the farm we started to see the long-term vision for the place and felt
… read more like we were part of bringing it to life. Typically, the work lasted a 4-5 hours and included gardening, fencing, or tending to the animals but I'm sure that will mostly depend on what time of the year you are there.
The part of this experience that really went above and beyond any expectations we had going in, was how much the hosts went out of their way to immerse ourselves in the Danish culture and their lives. Some of our fondest memories from our stay included; going out to lunch and walking around the local lights celebration, having hosts' mother tell us stories and cook us dinner, or curling up on the couch in the evenings and watch movies together.

Chalotte and Steene really takes care of the well being of the volunteers and makes sure that we are doing well. We worked a lot, but everyday the work are varied and Chalotte always works alongside us. The work includes taking care of the garden, watering, seeding, feeding the animals and some cleaning. It was hard work but we enjoyed it because of the amazing views and after work there's always some ice cream! During my stay I had the pleasure of having a typical Danish meal with all her family members and it was an unforgettable experience!
In short, I really enjoyed the experience in their beautiful farm and wish I can go back again!

I spent 3 weeks at Chalotte and Steen's home, it was my first experience as a workawayer, and I think that I was very lucky to start at their home.
We did a lot of jobs mostly gardening (digging, clean the soil, sprouting, planting, watering, seeding...) but also build some stuff for animals and the plants (a cage for the lovely new born
… read more chickens, a fence for the peas, a new house for the future pig moms... ), Some painting (while it was raining, not a lot during my stay ;) ), wood storage, and we also removed some fence (hard work but satisfying work ! )
The quality of life here is wonderful, if you are a nature lover you will find your happiness, a lot a wild animals are around the farm (deers, pheasant, geese, hare, ducks.. ) and pets in the farm (pigs, chickens, ducks, geese, dogs, cat), during this spring it was full of flowers, and it is easy to enjoy a beautiful sunset on the lake.
I felt like at home with Chalotte and Steen's hospitality, they are very friendly, positive, and include you inside the family (we (with other workawayer), have the luck to share a real Danish meal with all Chalotte family ! ) By the way, the meals were excellent, with very good products and always shared together (from cooking to eating ! )
In one word : fantastic !

I was supposed to spend 10 days at their farm, but had to leave after 5 days because of work, sadly.
WORK: The work was quite varied and not too hard. Mostly work on the field with digging, planting and building fences. Also some animal feeding in the morning and evening. Be sure to bring good gardening gloves because you're going to do a lot of
… read more field work (I cheaped out on mine and they broke after the first day), and good rubber boots because it might be raining at times.
ACCOMMODATION: Really great accommodation in a separate building from the main house. Two rooms on the ground floor with two beds in each room. A couch, table and three bathrooms with showers. The bed was super comfortable. Kitchen and living room (TV and Netflix) are in the main house, and are accessible at all times. It was also possible to wash your clothes whilst on the farm, which you'll probably need from all the dirt stains on behalf of the field work!
WEATHER: The weather was quite varied during my stay. Mostly sunny with about 10-15 degrees, sometimes rain for a couple of hours (yay, good for the plants in the field!), we also had hail for maybe like two minutes! But it was alright since we could work indoors if it was too bad.
ANIMALS: I really doubt if it's possible for farm animals to have it any better than at their farm!
They had two pregnant pigs (so future workawayer's will meet piglets!) that really enjoyed a good belly rub, and a male pig on loan. The pigs had a really big indoor space with lots of straw and an amazingly large outdoors pasture. Really huge! Lots of grass and some mud as well. They seemed to be very happy with life, understandably.
They also had some hens and a rooster, with a nice space indoors and they could walk wherever they wanted outdoors.
Some geese and some ducks had a very large space to roam outdoors with little houses and shelters and a little lake.
And let's not forget their wonderful cat Picnic, that I really feel in love with!
As well as their two dogs, Lyra with beautiful fur and the puppy Hjørdis, I wish that I could take her home with me! A lot of cuddles and kisses were exchanged between the two of us. She's energetic for sure!
FOOD: Breakfast is about 8.30 after the animals have been fed. It's your typical Danish breakfast with different kinds of bread and spreads, as well as yoghurt and muesli or berries. Juice, coffee, tea and hot chocolate too of course!
Lunch depends a little, but around 13.30-14. It's quite similar to the breakfast, but without the yoghurt and with saltier/meatier spreads.
Dinner is quite late at maybe 19, 19.30. The dinner was very varied, for example we had pasta, omelette, boiled ham and an insanely tasty quiche that the French workawayer made! It was so good.
LOCATION: The farm is about 1 hour from Copenhagen station with the train that takes you to Sorø - the train station closest to the farm. I'm not sure if there are any buses running from Sorø to the farm, but the hosts can probably drive you to/from the station! The nature around the farm is very beautiful, lots of fields. A beautiful lake is very close to the farm and there's an hill with an amazing view, although I didn't get to see it myself.
It's absolutely close enough to Copenhagen for a day visit!
There were some misunderstandings between us, but they were on my part since I didn't really get the directions at times. They were patient and didn't make a big deal out of it, just clarified a bit. I think that I had some difficulties since I had absolutely no former experiences, so some things I didn't really understand how to do or why to do it, and the tractor was a lot of fun to drive, but extremely hard for me since I don't have a driver's license.
I'm really glad I spent time here! It's a great place and I'm sure it'll be very exciting when the trees and plants have grown and chickens and piglets are born. The Bed and Breakfast will be really nice when they get started with that business.
I think the ideal place for me would be a place where there is more focus on working with more kinds of animals and maybe more building/manual work. Less gardening/planting/delicate work but that's just me - for everyone else that enjoys gardening it's a perfect place and whoever they get next are lucky to meet them!
