We spent 1.5 weeks with Phil, Katrina and the kids, and had a great time. We helped out with various small jobs in the garden like mowing the lawn, building a fence, and weeding the veggie patch. We also helped with some household chores. Most of the time, we looked after the kids for a few hours a day.

… read more minded people who made us feel welcome right from the start. Communication was easy and we had a lot of flexibility in how we spent our days. One thing we really appreciated was how they expressed their gratitude, it felt great to know that our help was appreciated.
We did some fun activities too, like watching Phil and Katrina play in a squash tournament, going to the beach and hanging out by the campfire in the evening (with marshmallows, of course).
We’d definitely recommend this Workaway experience – just be ready for the energy that comes with family life! But it also means lots of laughs :)

… read more enjoyed having a bit of our own space at time and relax time in the evening. The help is fairly easy overall we really did a bit of everything from helping to maintain their garden, picking fruits, cooking, laundry, cleaning, child care or the odd tasks around the property. They have such a lovely lifestyle block. It is a totally my dream lifestyle so it was so much fun to take care of the chicken and the sheeps and the garden everyday! *Also super educative for younger ones! We sold our car when we arrived here so we spent most of our time at the property and we felt happy this way. KP and Phil , generously, let us use their parent caravan for few days which was an amazing experience or also their car whenever we wanted to go to town. I will miss our time spent here for sure and all we have learned throughout our time with this lovely family! Thanks again for having us :) We hope to see you and your soon to be 3 kids in Canada in the near future !!

We enjoyed almost three weeks in Ashburton.
The accomodation in the self contained house is the best we ever had doing workaway, nice to have some private space but you're always more than welcomed to share time with the family.

… read more garden is amazingly maintained considering how many things Katrina and Phil are handling at the same times.
We were picking fresh eggs and berries every day.
The tasks were always well described and they gave us a list since the beginning (some small building projects, weeding, seeding, laundry and childcare). It's great as you can adjust your every day schedule to what's best considering the weather, they really trust you do to it without supervision.
As to mention the food is great :)
Emily and Harrison are funny, great dancers, independent and easy to look after, the property is so big and the bookshelf full so there's always something do to to keep them entertained
We really appreciated to be part of the family during these weeks even if sometimes our lives were quite busy and hectic. It felt great to go back to the main house after putting our son to bed and share some wine, boardgames and Christmas movies.
We were invited to their friends secret Santa 's brunch, a laid back BBQ with Phil's colleagues and a rainy but so fun tour of Ashburton's Christmas lights.
At last we spent some days celebrating Christmas with all Phil's family on their Kurow farm. Miss our talks there, playing in the paddlepool of rain and Katrina's trifle.
Would recommend this stay without hesitation

It's difficult to find the right words to describe our stay with Phil, Katrina and their gorgeous kids. This beautiful family helped us when our car broke down and we had to completely change our plans. They let us to stay much longer than the original plan was. We can't thank enough for all the help!

… read more variability. We spend a lot of time with finishing the container house (hope the future workawayers will have the best time there :-)) and also with gardening. The property is huge and so beautiful. It was a pleasure to work outside during the first days of spring. We also took care of the animals which was an experience we were keen to receive!
The accommodation was one of the best we've ever had. Our own room with a bathroom was very convenient as well as all the house. Phil and Katrina are busy people but we still found time to have fun together such as playing board games, watching movies with an ice cream, going for a family trip or just chatting about life :-) They also taught us to play squash which was awesome!
We can highly recommend this family. They're very welcoming, helpful and it's lovely to have them around. The place is beautiful, ideal for people who want to escape from the rush of the city. Phil and Katrina were always trying to find suitable work for us and they were very flexible with our hours - it was completely on us when we wanted to work. You'll need to be self-reliant as you work unsupervised for the most of the time.

Mischa and Vojta lived with us on our little lifestyle block for a touch over two months. They were excellent house guests and unbelievably helpful around the house. They helped with all kinds of projects including 'renovating' our tiny home, painting, building, sanding, paving, gardening! And so much more.

… read more they were extremely capable and able to just kick on and get things done!
They were also very conscientious and fun to be around the house. They great with our two you kids as well (and even with us) when after busy week we were all tired. They would help cook, clean, fold washing and just proactively help when infact they didn't need to.
They experienced the highs and low's of living in our busy family, and throughout there stay were just great people to be around. We did manage a few wine and board game nights as well which was fun. Mischa is very competitive :-)
We wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to any other host families. Sad to see them go in the end. All the best for your travels guys!

Valentine, was a most excellent work-awayer and we thoroughly enjoyed having him live with us for over a month! He helped exceptionally hard, and took to any task we set him with enthusiasm and initiative. We designed, and built a deck, we did many other building projects, and even when we
… read more didn't know how, we sat down watched you tube videos, and then he would get out there and do it. He also completed the work to a very high standard.
Because I work full time I wasn't always around during the day so some nights we would be out in the dark with headlights. All of this was done with a smile on his face, and was always a lot of fun.
The children really enjoyed his company (and when he came back after near three months away) our 14 month old daughter and three year old son effectively ran to him!
He cooked, cleaned up after our messy dinners, and brought us hot chocolate on the couch.
Valentine, now helps in our family farming business, as we really wanted to keep him around! So he has a paying job here in NZ.
Would definitely recommend him to anyone considering at hosting him. Much more than you might expect from and 18 year old!

I always appreciated their excellent communication skills in terms of work expectations. They were clear in giving me tasks to do while still giving me the opportunity to share my opinion. This way, we always came up with a good plan for what needed to be done.
On top of all that, Katrina and Phil are amazing cooks, and the food they made was always delicious. It was so much fun just having dinner all together, especially with the kids laughing and smiling around.
I would recommend staying with them to almost everyone, as there are many different tasks and experiences to enjoy. However, it's helpful if you enjoy working in the garden and playing with kids.
Being in their company and on their lifestyle block was an extremely enriching experience, and I am already planning to visit them again soon. I feel extremely lucky to have met them!

It is crazy how 3 weeks can fly by when you live with such a loving and kind family. During my stay I learned a lot about gardening, taking care of kids and some new English words;) I helped in the garden, in the house and also got some creative jobs which I enjoyed a lot.

Some more highlights:
Movie nights, eating dinner together everyday, dancing with the kids, jumping on the trampoline and helping around the house. And especially having chats next to the fire after dinner with a hot chocolate in my hands.
Spending time with the kids was amazing. Cuddles and high fives from Emily as well as hugs and playing football with Harry warmed my heart and made me smile everyday.
Katrina and Phil have such a magical home and I am forever grateful that they welcomed me with open arms and big kind hearts. I would ABSOLUTELY recommend them to everyone!<3
I already miss them so much and I am looking forward to see everybody again (hopefully very soon).

… read more garden where I’m happiest! The veg garden is Katrina’s labor of love and it shows; the variety and quality of fruit and veg is awesome.
I spent loads of time with them and the kids playing and hanging out, my favourite games being: balloon volleyball with Harry, and baby aeroplane with little Emily, and watching Brooklyn 99 with a wine and the adults. I luckily managed to be there for Phil and Harry’s birthdays so I was also able to hang out with both sides of their family - everyone is great!
