  • Descrição

Hi we are Saidbh (sive) and Gráinne (grownya) , two childhood friends from the West of Ireland. Our motivation for joining Workaway is that of finding ecological and sustainable projects, social-care based work or community intiatives, as well as alternative educational approaches in which we can gain further knowledge and skills from.

We are located approximately 45 minutes from the beautiful and quaint city of Galway. Having attended a small primary school, taught through the Irish language, we founded a great friendship and developed together a passion for our own culture as well as others.

Both of us are quite friendly, we enjoy meeting new people and learning about people's different perspectives and ways. We are both adventurous, with Saidbh thoroughly enjoying a good adrenaline kick and Gráinne, after a little complaining, often joining in.

Having travelled many a times together, from walking and wild camping the 'Camino De Santiago' from Portugal to working a ski season last year within the Austrian Alps, we are well used to spending long periods of time together and have a sister-like bond. We are both nature lovers, who have a great curiosity for the wilderness and find deep enjoyment in outdoor sports and activities.

Our South American trip begins at the end of February, by attending the Carnaval in Barrenquilla. This was by total chance that we arrive into Colombia at the time of the Carnaval. So we had to take the opportunity by both hands. We are both big fans of small independent festivals, that offer artistic expression to communities of people. The Carnaval is a perfect place for our trip to commence. We would like to travel towards Santa Marta following the Carnaval celebrations, and possibly after a few days beside the Caribbean Sea, we hope to find a Workaway which can allow us to be immersed in Espanol, as one of our main goals of our travel is to learn the language. We have 90 days to travel around Colombia, and intend to travel into Ecuador or Peru, depending on what opportunities arise.

We have a rough idea of our travel destinations. However, our main priority is to travel slow and take the time to appreciate all we see, hear, feel, smell and taste. We know that our travels will bring a lot of happy moments, as well as more tough and difficult ones - however, we look forward to all of these experiences, the positives and negatives. Both of us are well attuned to the ebb and flow of life.

Our interest in small community based festivals, has grown throughout the years. We began volunteering for a number of steward roles within Irish festivals back in 2016. The love and passion we have gained for this area of our lives, has led us down many different paths. I (Saidbh) worked as part of the build crew for 'Flow Fest', a sober event that focused on movement and play, participating in many workshops based on teaching and improving circus skills. And I (Gráinne), have travelled to Spain for a small regional burn, in which I mainly worked as a lead to help with waste and recycling management. These burns have taught me the beauty of sharing experiences within a multi-cultural community, as well as helping me to understand the importance of self-expression through the means of art and celebrations.

In 2023, both of us came up with the idea of needing a small chill out area within our local Irish burn. After attending the event a year previous, we saw the need for a space of relaxation and comfort, where participants could take a few minutes, or hours to simply be. We let our creative beings take hold and took to making decorations for the inside of our space. We made bunting. Saidbh created a focal piece to celebrate 'the sesh'. We gathered fabrics and blankets to decorate and make the space comfortable to entice people to sit, or recline. We bought lights to ensure people could see while chilling in the area. During the creation of this space, we learnt a lot about working with what you have, using recyclable materials and asking others for help in gathering materials. This was a fun and very rewarding project, as we spent time throughout the gathering to check on the space and see the ways people had decided to make use of it. We of course had to add a box of cards and board games, as we do love a good table game to keep us occupied.

We are searching for Workaways that give us the opportunities to learn new skills and advance possible beginner skills. We are really interested in all things 'DIY', and would love to gain some building skills, as well as more horticulture knowledge.

  • Quais são suas habilidades?

As we say here in Ireland, we both have one of the best skills of all, 'the gift of the gob' meaning we love a good chat.

    Saidbh:
Growing up I worked the weekends with my family in their stall selling crepes in the Galway market where I learned about community and developed skills in cooking, cleaning and customer service. Later in life I ran the stall for a couple of years which gave me the opportunity to develop skills in management.

During this time in Galway I assisted in an afterschool club for disadvantaged children in a youth development centre, it was here that I further developed my skills in childcare. This experience inspired me to begin my exploration into adventure therapy which led me to spending a year on the island of Achill where I trained in kayaking, canoeing, stand up paddle boarding, hill walking, power boat driving, surfing, mountain rescue first aid, camping and climbing.

Since then I have worked with; an Irish language summer camp - where my role is to support the language development of teenagers through outdoor pursuits - and also more recently with a charity organisation that facilitates water based summer camps for children with additional needs - in this role I work 1:1 with children and teenagers with physical and/or mental disabilities, using adventure and nature as a form of therapy.

Outside of my professional life I love to craft and create having spent much time growing up being involved with our local arts festival, assisting with whatever needed making for the parade or other events. Since then I have been involved with the burning man in both Spain and Ireland where I had the opportunity to work on artistic ventures. I know my way around a sewing machine and how to knit, I have basic photography skills which I am always looking to improve, I can sketch and paint and I could teach you to make a traditional St. Brigid's cross.

I grew up in the countryside where we have always had many pets - cats, dogs, hamsters, snakes, fish - and I have even worked as a professional dog sitter and walker in the snowy alps during my time in Austria. I come from a farming background and although I was never been greatly involved in the farming I am no stranger to being around larger farm animals - sheep/cows/horses - and am certainly not afraid of getting my hands dirty.

Speaking of dirty hands, growing up we grew our own vegetables which has given me a life-long love for growing , a skill I am looking to improve upon through workaway opportunities.
I am definitely no stranger to painting a house, I am familiar with basic tools and DIY jobs from my time renovating our family home and working on festival sites, this is another skillset I am hoping to develop though workaway.

    Grainne:
I spent 4 years in University studying a mouthful of subjects, with my main love being that of Irish, human rights and sociology. After finishing my degree I went into studying a year long qualification in Early Childhood Care and Education, finding a great joy in working within early year's education, as I have found the child-centred and play-based curriculum an extremely interesting and important factor to the roles I have held.

During my university studies I did a one year placement with a charity called; 'The Galway Simon Community'. This work gave me first hand experience in working with those affected by homelessness. I experienced a 'Housing First Ethos' that places the needs of the client before their physical or mental illness.

In 2022 I completed an European Solidarity Corps Project, where I worked with Cruz Vermelha in a small northern town of Portugal. This 6 month volunteering project gave me great insight into working with disadvantaged youth, that were residing within a home for teenage boys.

This summer I had the opportunity to combine my years of experience in childcare with my love for the outdoors by working for a charity who facilitate a water based summer camp for children with additional needs. From this role I gained and developed skills on the water working with kayaks, canoes and SUP boards.

After gaining so many skills with water sports I then took those skills and worked with an Irish language summer school where I assisted with the outdoor pursuits through the language of Irish.
Since then I have received my certification in 'Aquatic Teacher training for children and adults with additional needs, both physical and/or intellectual.

I have spent two winter seasons working in both the French an Austrian Alps where I have worked with children which gave me the opportunity to further my English teaching skills and also made me familiar with working with a more culturally diverse group of families.

In between working with children I have spent time working in kitchens. I have worked in a full kitchen where I learned to prepare a variety of foods and I have also worked with Saidbh in the Galway market where I was customer facing whilst cooking. These roles have given me skills in cooking but also cleaning and time management.

Outside of work I have gained many skills in project management through my time spent being involved with 'Nowhere', Europe's largest burn, where I am often involved in the leave no trace team. I have also gained skills in basic tools through my time assisting with the build.
